Women are more likely than men to feel that they lack investment knowledge. This can discourage them from taking even basic steps in ensuring their long-term financial security. For this reason, many women face a real risk of being financially under-prepared for retirement. Being poor is not anyone’s idea of a good time. Sad statistic: women are 80% more likely to be in poverty at retirement compared to a man. However, the good news is that with some guidance women are very well placed to grow their wealth and become financially empowered. In fact, studies indicate that there are actually some qualities that make women better investors. For example, women often trade less often than men because they have a longer term outlook. These qualities make women well-suited to become successful financially. To learn more about Anjali, visit: https://www.dahliawealth.com/about To learn more about Houston Money Week visit:

It's often said that the chairman of the Fed is the second most powerful person in the world, next only to the president of the United States. Some say the chairman is even more powerful. When Ben Bernanke publicly stated on September 8, 2013, the Fed's intent to continue its policy of quantitative easing, global markets instantly reversed direction from a worrying downward spiral to an exuberant upward surge. Even POTUS can't do that. Dr. Robert R. Johnson's Invest with the Fed takes the simple position that correct interpretation of Federal Reserve policy actions leads to better investing decisions. To this end, they present strategies that will help you design a portfolio that takes Fed policy into account. Dr. Johnson is the author of multiple books and scholarly articles on portfolio management, asset valuation, wealth management, and monetary policy. He currently serves as Professor of Finance in Creighton University's Heider College of Business and on the board of RS Investment Management. From 1996 to 2011 he held a number of senior executive positions at CFA Institute and has extensive experience with credentialing programs, ethical and professional codes of conduct, and global business expansion. He is co-author of the books Strategic Value Investing, The Tools and Techniques of Investment Planning, and Investment Banking for Dummies. He is also coauthor of the forthcoming book Investing by Fed, which is scheduled to be published in December of 2014. House of Trump, House of Putin offers the first comprehensive investigation into the decades-long relationship among Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and the Russian Mafia that ultimately helped win Trump the White House. Our guest today was Craig Unger. Craig Unger is the New York Times bestselling author of House of Trump, House of Putin; House of Bush, House of Saud, and other books. The former editor in chief of Boston Magazine, he has written for New York Magazine, The New Yorker, Esquire, among many other publications, and has been a longtime contributing editor of Vanity Fair magazine. A graduate of Harvard University, he has appeared as an analyst on dozens of broadcast outlets. He lives in New York City. It is a chilling story that begins in the 1970s, when Trump made his first splash in the booming, money-drenched world of New York real estate, and ends with Trump's inauguration as president of the United States. That moment was the culmination of Vladimir Putin's long mission to undermine Western democracy, a mission that he and his hand-selected group of oligarchs and Mafia kingpins had ensnared Trump in, starting more than 20 years ago with the massive bailout of a string of sensational Trump hotel and casino failures in Atlantic City. This book confirms the most incredible American paranoias about Russian malevolence. How much do you pay in Flood Insurance? The average homeowner can pay over $100 a month. Which of course is $1200 a year. On a thirty-year loan, that equates to $36,000. That's a lot of money! Wouldn't it be great if you could get your Flood Insurance rate reduced? Better yet, what if you didn't have to pay for ANY Flood Insurance? In his book, Flood Money, author Brad Hubbard shares how he has saved residential clients hundreds of thousands of dollars by legally getting them out of a flood zone. He has saved his commercial clients an excess of a million dollars! Now, he is showing the world exactly how he does it. This book is a step-by-step guide to fighting FEMA and other federal and state organizations by equipping you with the tools and knowledge needed to find out your true Flood Zone. The banks have told us that we need to pay flood insurance. The problem is that for many people, that decision was made decades ago using rudimentary tools and practices. Brad brings his Engineering background into play and, using modern methods and good old-fashioned common sense, can show you how to find out if you're paying tens of thousands of dollars that you don't have to. After reading this book and following these steps, a good question for you might be, "What are you going to spend your money on now that you don't have to pay for Flood Insurance?" Who doesn’t want to know how to be their best when it matters most? To be more creative, more contented, more consumed? To soar and not to sink? As the deeds of these athletes prove, if we can master flow, there are no limits to what we can accomplish. In this groundbreaking book, New York Times–bestselling author Steven Kotler decodes the mystery of ultimate human performance. Drawing on over a decade of research and first-hand reporting with dozens of top action and adventure sports athletes like big wave legend Laird Hamilton, big mountain snowboarder Jeremy Jones, and skateboarding pioneer Danny Way, Kotler explores the frontier science of “flow,” an optimal state of consciousness in which we perform and feel our best.
Steven’s work have been translated into over 40 languages and appeared in over 100 publications, including The New York Times, Atlantic Monthly, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Wired and TIME. He also appears frequently on television and radio, and lectures widely on human performance, disruptive technology and radical innovation. He is also the cofounder of Creating Equilibrium, a conference/concert/innovation accelerator focused on solving critical environmental challenges, and, alongside his wife, author Joy Nicholson, Steven is the cofounder of Rancho de Chihuahua, a hospice care/special needs care dog sanctuary in the mountains of Northern New Mexico. Our ego, and its accompanying sense of nagging self-doubt as we work to be bigger, better, smarter, and more in control, is one affliction we all share. And while our ego claims to have our best interests at heart, in its never-ending pursuit of attention and power, it sabotages the very goals it sets to achieve. In Advice Not Given, renowned psychiatrist and author Dr. Mark Epstein reveals how Buddhism and Western psychotherapy, two traditions that developed in entirely different times and places and, until recently, had nothing to do with each other, both identify the ego as the limiting factor in our well-being, and both come to the same conclusion: When we give the ego free reign, we suffer; but when it learns to let go, we are free. Mark Epstein, M.D. is a psychiatrist in private practice in New York City and the author of a number of books about the interface of Buddhism and psychotherapy, including Thoughts without a Thinker, Going to Pieces without Falling Apart, Going on Being, Open to Desire and Psychotherapy without the Self. His newest work, The Trauma of Everyday Life, will be published in August of 2013 by Penguin Press. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Harvard University and is currently Clinical Assistant Professor in the Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis at New York University. With money being one of the most constrained resources for individuals in today's world, budgeting can be a simple, yet powerful tool to save money fast. Mitchell Walker is the creator and author of the PouchPlan Budget system. After spending 15 years as a CFO of a Berkshire Hathaway company, 11 years as a partner in a public tax practice, owning multiple businesses, serving as CFO of a college and as County Commissioner and City Councilman, Mitchell reveals why the personal side of money is often the most neglected but most important thing to get right. Mitchell was deep in debt and his finances were a mess when the love of his life came on the scene. They started a blended family with 5 children ages 5 to 17 and a lot more love than money. He had to figure out new ways to make money work for him and fast. How he discovered a new approach to personal budgeting will inform and entertain your audience. Mitchell likes to say that they went from “Ouch to Pouch.” He enjoys sharing how getting money right makes life easier, much easier; getting it wrong just makes life harder. How much can you spend in retirement? Naturally, this is an essential question for those approaching this important life transition. Essentially, if you wish to retire one day, you are increasingly responsible for figuring out how to save during your working years and convert your savings into sustainable income for an ever-lengthening number of retirement years. The nature of risk also changes in retirement, as the lifestyle of retirees become more vulnerable to the impacts of market volatility, unknown longevity, and spending shocks. Money has the power to destroy, but it can also be an incredibly effective tool for social change. Impact investing – the support of social and environmental projects with a financial return – has become a hot topic on the global stage; poised to eclipse traditional aid by ten times in the next decade. And it has the potential to completely restructure the global economy, making social and environmental responsibility integral to how we move money through society, rather than an afterthought. In her book REAL IMPACT: The New Economics of Social Change, Morgan Simon argues that impact investing will do a lot of good – if we can get it right. An impact investor with 17 years of experience who has influenced over $150 billion from endowments, families, and foundations – who also manages funds for members of the seventh wealthiest family in America – Simon sees warning signs that impact investment is at a crucial turning point. As investors focus on growth and acceptance, it’s actually in danger of replicating the same mistakes of traditional charity and finance that impact investment was designed to correct. And without the right guiding principles, it has the potential to do more harm than good On today’s show we talked with Author Morgan Simon about her book Real Impact - The New Economics of Social Change. Morgan Simon is a widely recognized leader in impact investment who builds bridges between finance and social justice. Over the past seventeen years, she has influenced over $150 billion from high-net-worth individuals, foundations, and endowments. She supports Pi Investments and the Libra Foundation, and is also co- founder and chair of the nonprofit Transform Finance. To learn more about Simon visit:

It’s not a revelation to learn that any comedian offstage is a shy weirdo. What’s utterly revealing and totally fantastic about this film is seeing Gilbert Gottfried's marriage, which is a model of affection and good sense in the face of eccentricity. Every couple should see this. Every marriage should be more like his. This is the rare film where a look at a performer’s private life is not what you expect at all, and also weirdly inspiring. I loved this. Ira Glass Legendary comedian Gilbert Gottfried has had quite the career. Rocketing to fame in the 1980s, he was thrust into the public consciousness almost immediately thanks to his brash personality, unique worldview, and off-kilter comic timing. Now, foul-mouthed and unapologetic after decades of flying solo in both his work and in his personal life, Gilbert has shockingly reinvented himself…as a family man. Director Neil Berkeley’s Gilbert reveals an unexpected side to the iconic comedian. The film peeks behind the larger-than-life persona at a more personal story about growing up in Brooklyn and becoming a husband and father late in life. Gottfried’s singular outlook on life and his ability to bring humor to even the darkest situations has, at times, gotten him into trouble. Still he soldiers on, an expert craftsman at bringing his audience to the edge (and sometimes pushing them over). Gilbert strips the comedic character away to reveal the man behind it. Berkeley allows the audience an intimate — even vulnerable — view of Gottfried out of character. On today’s show we talked with Director Neil Berkeley about his upcoming documentary Gilbert which will be showing on November 8th in Houston at The Alamo Drafthouse.
Neil Berkeley, Producer/ Director/ Writer Neil Berkeley is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker and entrepreneur. His first feature film, Beauty Is Embarrassing, premiered at SXSW in 2012 and chronicles the life and times of the inspiring artist Wayne White. The film won several Best Documentary awards and was featured in PBS’ Independent Lens in January of 2013. His second feature, Harmontown, premiered at SXSW in 2014 and follows self-destructive TV writer Dan Harmon on an emotional, cross-country journey of self-discovery. He is currently in production on his fourth feature documentary, currently titled Death Is a Door. The film is the story of how American rock music became a lifestyle for many young Cubans in the late ’80s. The decisions they made led to rampant police abuse combined with oppression from the government and eventually drove several hundred of them to self-inject with HIV.
Berkeley is also a successful commercial and promo director and has worked with brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac and Kraft Foods. He is the owner of BRKLY, a design based production company focused on developing marketing campaigns for network and cable television. The company has helped launch some of TV’s most popular shows, including Brother vs. Brother, Scandal, Project Runway, Top Chef and many more.

For many marketing professionals, "science" is a four-letter word. They see brand-building as an unteachable art guided by their intuition and experience. But at its core, marketing aims to seed ideas into people's minds, make them feel a certain way, and, ultimately, get them to act. Our guest today was Daryl Weber, author of Brand Seduction: How Neuroscience Can Help Marketers Build Memorable Brands. We discussed the role of brand in the presidential election, and much more.In Brand Seduction, Daryl reveals the latest psychological and neuroscientific discoveries about how our minds process brand information and make decisions, and the important roles our emotions and unconscious play in our selections. Drawing from examples gathered over two decades of turning a weekly Fort Worth comedy show into a full-time business that has them traveling the world and serving as Entrepreneurs in Residence at the business school at Texas Christian University, co-authors David Wilk, David Ahearn, and Frank Ford demonstrate how “yes, and” thinking helps improve communication skills, facilitate creative problem solving, and generate new ideas that can refresh and rejuvenate. From understanding the value of open minded, active listening (the ability to say “yes” to anything and mean it); to a willingness to offer out-of-the-box ideas without prejudgment (putting the “and” into action); to demonstrating authentic respect for the ideas and intentions of others, Happy Accidents shows how the same elements that make for great teamwork on stage prove to be immensely successful strategies in the workplace and board room. Frank Ford has had a successful career in the entertainment industry for the last 25 years and is one of the founding members and owner of Four Day Weekend, a comedy institution in Texas. He has also studied at the renowned Second City Conservatory in Chicago and taught advanced classes at the Four Day Weekend Training Center. As a professional actor, Frank has appeared in numerous commercial spots, television shows and films. In addition, he has received critical-acclaim for his original comedy revues, comedy album, short films and acting roles. Over the years, Frank has been recognized for his writing, including the sale of an original comedy to 20th Century FOX. Frank has recently finished writing a feature film, is working on a pilot treatment for HBO and is in the process of publishing his first book entitled, Happy Accidents, which teaches people how use the philosophy of improvisation in a positive way to enrich their lives. Money Matters Episode 166- Will Financial Counseling Laboratories Change Financial Planning? W/ Derek Tharp
It is widely acknowledged that there is both an ‘art’ and a ‘science’ to financial planning. Technical knowledge – the “science” – is crucial to delivering the technically accurate advice to clients. But the best advice in the world is meaningless if the financial advisor can’t master the “art” of delivering it in a skillful manner – leading a client to actually take action and improve their financial well-being. Yet despite its label as “art”, the reality is that how best to deliver financial advice advice can itself be subjected to scientific scrutiny. Which is beginning to happen, with the emergence of several “financial counseling laboratories” in educational institutions across the country. Derek is the founder of Conscious Capital, a fee-only boutique wealth management firm that specializes in socially conscious investing. In addition to helping their clients manage their investments in a manner that is consistent with their values, they also provide comprehensive financial planning to help their clients grow and protect their hard-earned wealth. Derek holds a BS in Finance and an MFCS in Family Financial Planning from Iowa State University. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Personal Financial Planning through Kansas State University. Tharp has been quoted in several financial publications including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Investment Advisor Magazine, Investor’s Business Daily, and InvestmentNews. Derek is also a co-author of a chapter in the textbook Financial Therapy: Theory, Research, and Practice. Today's retirement looks nothing like your parents' experience. Our longer life expectancy and increasing intellectual capital have transformed our notion of the golden years. Often we're just not ready for a life without work. We fear outliving our money and our meaning. We want to stay productive (whatever that means to us personally) well into the future and for baby boomers and the following generations, that future is closer than we think. No matter your definition of financial confidence, with the right tools and approach, you can create the retirement of your dreams: your memorable encore. The Encore Curve examines two crucial questions: Now what am I going to do? and will I have enough money? Andy Raub has helped countless individuals plan for their retirement and manage their investments. As an early Baby Boomer, he understands the fears most retirees now face, which prompted him to write a book to help them reset their life goals and reorganize their money so they can live with renewed purpose. "The road to the future leads us smack into the wall. We simply ricochet off the alternatives that destiny offers: a demographic explosion that triggers social chaos and spreads death, nuclear delirium, and the quasi-annihilation of the species. Our survival is no more than a question of 25, 50, or perhaps 100 years." If you really want to understand President Donald Trump's finances, the first two pages of his federal income tax return isn't the best place to look. Fraud can happen anywhere—even in the most successful companies. Most businesses, large and small, lose an average of 5% of their annual gross revenues to insider fraud. Forensic accountant Tiffany Couch is a sleuth with an adding machine. She has seen theft in many forms, but what sticks with her the most is not the fraud schemes or the dollar losses. It’s the victims who all experience the same emotional devastation that these crimes leave in their wake. Two in three people experience bullying at work either directly or indirectly. It’s one of the most pervasive and damaging aspects of professional life today. It can destroy lives, careers, marriages, families, corporations and brand value. Whether you work in the boardroom or the mailroom, at some time, you will be a victim, a bully or a bystander.

Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever; obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup. He explains what research has shown about our addiction to sweets. He clarifies the arguments against sugar, corrects misconceptions about the relationship between sugar and weight loss; and provides the perspective necessary to make informed decisions about sugar as individuals and as a society. GARY TAUBES is cofounder of the Nutrition Science Initiative (NuSI). He's an award-winning science and health journalist, the author of Why We Get Fat and Good Calories, Bad Calories, and a former staff writer for Discover and correspondent for the journal Science. His writing has also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, and Esquire, and has been included in numerous Best of anthologies, including The Best of the Best American Science Writing (2010). He has received three Science in Society Journalism Awards from the National Association of Science Writers. He is also the recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Award in Health Policy Research. He lives in Oakland, California. After five years living in a studio that was 90 square feet (12' x 7.5' - roughly the perimeter of a Honda Accord), people sent me messages from all over the world, amazed at how I was able to fit my entire life in a tiny space. Some asked for advice, others thought I was nuts, saying that for the same price I could live in a larger space elsewhere. What most folks didn't realize was that I may have been living in a tiny space, but I was living large. 90 Lessons for Living Large in 90 Square Feet (...or more), part memoir/part "want to" guide, gives 90 lessons that I learned about organizing, downsizing and "living large" as a result of living in that tiny space. Hope they help you too. Today we were joined by Author, Felice Cohen. We discussed her book 90 Lessons for Living Large in 90 Square Feet.

In January 2015, life changed dramatically for us... we decided it was time to give up on our ordinary life, follow our dreams and travel the world. Why wait until we retire? Why wait until the kids have left home? We decided to do it now, WITH our kids. So this is our story... our journey as we've created a new life for ourselves. Some may say we are crazy, some simply don't understand, but the decision to give up our location dependent life to become digital nomads has ignited something within us. We are excited. Today we were joined by travel blogger, Karen King. We discussed traveling on a budget, traveling with kids and even how to find free room and board while traveling.

Nearly half of all working Americans could risk losing their jobs because of technology. It’s not only blue-collar jobs at stake. Millions of educated knowledge workers—writers, paralegals, assistants, medical technicians—are threatened by accelerating advances in artificial intelligence. The industrial revolution shifted workers from farms to factories. In the first era of automation, machines relieved humans of manually exhausting work. Today, Era Two of automation continues to wash across the entire services-based economy that has replaced jobs in agriculture and manufacturing. Era Three, and the rise of AI, is dawning. Smart computers are demonstrating they are capable of making better decisions than humans. Brilliant technologies can now decide, learn, predict, and even comprehend much faster and more accurately than the human brain, and their progress is accelerating. Where will this leave lawyers, nurses, teachers, and editors? In Only Humans Need Apply, Thomas Hayes Davenport and Julia Kirby reframe the conversation about automation, arguing that the future of increased productivity and business success isn’t either human or machine. It’s both. The key is augmentation, utilizing technology to help humans work better, smarter, and faster. Instead of viewing these machines as competitive interlopers, we can see them as partners and collaborators in creative problem solving as we move into the next era. The choice is ours. Most parents will do just about anything to secure happy lives and bright futures for their kids. Add in competition with other parents and near-constant pressure, their drive to give their kids the best of everything can backfire, setting back the child and the household finances. Brett Graff, "The Home Economist," exposes how overspending can harm children by setting back intellect and encouraging narcissism, depression and unhealthy or unsafe habits. By unearthing research on pricey baby gear, oversized houses, so-called "educational" toys and after-school lessons, expensive sports equipment and private coaching, even certain organic products and unregulated "natural" medicines - she even has eye-opening findings on private schools versus public schools - Graff proves that we can spend too much getting our kids ahead and wind up instead setting them back. Not Buying It proves that sound, rational decision-making about spending is far more beneficial for our kids than purchases made out of fear, pressure and confusion. With Graff's guidance, you'll confidently create the financial strategy that's best for your family, not the one pushed by marketers or practiced by your neighbors. Not Buying It is your blueprint for emotional and financial freedom, and the stability your children deserve.
Brett Graff is a former US government economist who today is a family finance expert reporting the information that helps families maximize their money and their lives. A nationally syndicated columnist, her pieces – called THE HOME ECONOMIST – run first in The Miami Herald and then in over 400 media outlets across the country including the Chicago Tribune and The Kansas City Star. Using interviews, NASA oral histories, and recently declassified material, Into the Black pieces together the dramatic untold story of the Columbia mission and the brave people who dedicated themselves to help the United States succeed in the age of space exploration. On April 12, 1981, NASA’s Space Shuttle Columbia blasted off from Cape Canaveral. It was the most advanced, state-of-the-art flying machine ever built, challenging the minds and imagination of America’s top engineers and pilots. Columbia was the world’s first real spaceship: a winged rocket plane, the size of an airliner, and capable of flying to space and back before preparing to fly again.

In 2016 we have seen many musicians pass away. Almost daily we are surprised with headlines of celebrity deaths. The story we often fail to hear is the mess that's left behind for survivors if estate issues are not taken care of before hand. For those who haven't yet done any estate planning -- finalizing legal documents to manage and pass on property and set out wishes for end-of-life matters -- it's likely on their list of things to do. We were joined by Estate Planning attorney Robert "Eli" Kiefaber . Robert “Eli” Kiefaber is dedicated to providing comprehensive and highly personalized counsel in estate planning, wealth preservation strategies, beneficiary and inheritance protection and business planning. As co-founder of Kiefaber & Oliva LLP, he holds the firm’s value of exceptional client services and lawyer accessibility. Eli has a holistic approach to estate planning and designing wealth preservation strategies. He focuses on listening closely to the concerns, goals, dreams and values of his clients. He works closely with his clients throughout the estate planning process to develop strategies that achieve the goals and values of his clients. As a husband and father, Eli recognizes that estate planning is more than avoiding probate or estate taxes, but providing and caring for families and loved ones. In this age or rapid disruption driven by technology and globalization, jobs and entire career tracks are created and destroyed in front of our eyes. Today's careers are episodic- they don't happen on a smooth path, but move through many phases. No job is perfect forever, and we have to be prepared to adapt and move on, perhaps multiple times, unlike our parents and grandparents who may have stayed in one company all their lives. Friday we were joined by author, Farai Chideya. We discussed changing careers, growing in your current position and the retirement dilemma. Farai Chideya has combined media, technology, and socio-political analysis during her twenty-five-year career as an award-winning author, journalist, professor, and lecturer. She is a Distinguished Writer in Residence at New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and a senior writer for the data, politics, and sports site FiveThirtyEight.com. She was also a spring 2012 fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics. She frequently appears on public radio and cable television, speaking about race, politics, and culture. She was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated magna cum laude with a BA from Harvard University in 1990. College is a time of new found freedom for many students. But that can spell trouble if that freedom applies to personal finances too. Students need to understand basic money management skills such as living within a budget and handling credit and debt. A solid financial foundation can lead to a lifetime of financial success. We were joined on the show by Patsy Collins. Patsy Collins is the Director of the Student Money Management Center at Sam Houston State University. She is an Accredited Financial Counselor and is the Association for Financial Counseling Planning and Education’s - Counselor of the Year. She is also a contributing author to Dr. Jay Liebowitz’ book Financial Literacy Education: Addressing Student, Business, and Government Needs. Patsy doesn’t believe that graduates from Sam Houston State University should live paycheck to paycheck. With that goal in mind, the Student Money Management Center teaches the students at Sam Houston State University how to deliberately and intentionally aggregate wealth so they don’t just survive – they thrive!
