In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Bryan, a Certified Financial Planner, who shared some incredible insights and advice that you won't want to miss. Here are three key takeaways from our conversation: 1️⃣ Find Your Passion: Bryan emphasized the importance of regularly evaluating what you are truly passionate about. Take the time to have deep conversations with yourself and reflect on whether you are on track to achieving what you ultimately want in life. It's crucial to align your actions with your passions and make adjustments along the way. 2️⃣ Information vs. Wisdom: With the abundance of information available today, it's essential to exercise caution. Bryan highlighted that not all information out there is backed by wisdom. While technology has made information accessible to everyone, it's crucial to seek out credible sources who can provide valuable insights. Don't just rely on opinions from unverified sources. 3️⃣ Balance and Fitness: Bryan shared his personal experience of how maintaining a healthy work-life balance positively impacted his productivity. He explained that engaging in physical fitness activities, such as training for an Ironman, reenergized both his physical and mental well-being. Business leaders rise to the top by excelling at doing the work—completing tasks, producing deliverables, meeting deadlines—but once they’re in charge, they must pivot to focus on interpersonal relationships. And, as master coach and founder of MettaWorks Rachel Rider explains in WHO YOU ARE IS HOW YOU LEAD (Muse Literary; Spring 2023), the first relationship any leader must work on is the one they have with themself. In this insight-packed, psychology-infused book, Rider shares how she’s helped hundreds of business leaders at companies like GitHub and Okta become high-functioning and self-optimized by identifying and rewiring unhelpful patterns of behavior and training them to prioritize relationship-building. She reveals her in-demand methodology, which is built on the idea that effectiveness as a leader is a direct reflection of one’s inner life. Today we visited with Kelly and Rachel Rider to do a deep dive into her new book Who You Are is How You Lead. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Rachel Rider founded MettaWorks in 2015 after a distinguished career in HR, receiving executive coaching certification from Columbia University, and extensive training in meditation, Somatic Experiencing, and Polarity Therapy. Starting as HR Business Partner responsible for developing and coaching leaders and teams at Bloomberg, she went on to specialize in leadership coaching at AppNexus (since acquired by AT&T) and Digital Ocean, the third-largest hosting company in the world. She studied under renowned teacher and Zen Mountain Monastery founder John Daido Loori Roshi for 13 years before continuing under his successor, Shugen Arnold Roshi. Rider completed a three-year intensive certification in Somatic Experiencing in 2018, and a 2020 training in Polarity Therapy with the aim of bringing leaders tools to unlock effective, long-lasting change in concert with the body. Since 2020, she’s been working intensively with anti-racism coach Makeda Pennycooke. Rider lives in New York with her husband and two children. More about Rachel L. As we prepare for retirement it is very common for people to have goals like traveling or visiting grandchildren. The bleak reality is that even though we might have done everything financially correct to prepare for the retirement stage of life , mobility and health issues can often put a damper on these important goals. How do we give ourselves the tools to physically age gracefully and to continue to enjoy a retired life when these physical roadblocks appear? Today we visited with Kelly and Juliet Starrett to do a deep dive into their new book Built to Move. After decades spent working with pro-athletes, Olympians, and Navy Seals, mobility pioneers Kelly and Juliet Starrett began thinking about the physical well-being of the rest of us. What makes a durable human? How do we continue to feel great and function well as we age? And how do we counteract the effects of technology-dependence, sedentary living, and other modern ways of life on our body’s natural need for activity? The answers lie in an easy-to-use formula for basic mobility maintenance: 10 tests + 10 physical practices = 10 ways to make your body work better The book offers:
Juliet Starrett is an entrepreneur, attorney, author, and podcaster. She is co-founder and CEO of TheReadyState.com, which has revolutionized how athletes think about human movement and athletic performance as well as former CEO of San Francisco CrossFit, one of the first 50 CrossFit affiliates. She is the co-author of the Wall Street Journal Bestseller, Deskbound and co-host of The Ready State Podcast. Before turning her attention to The Ready State and San Francisco CrossFit full-time, Juliet had a successful career as an attorney, practicing complex commercial litigation at Reed Smith for nearly eight years. Kelly is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and is the co-author of the New York Times bestsellers Becoming a Supple Leopard and Ready to Run and the Wall Street Journal bestseller Deskbound. Kelly was also the co-founder of San Francisco CrossFit, the 21st CrossFit affiliate. Kelly consults with athletes and coaches from the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB the US Olympic Team and CrossFit works with elite Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard forces, and consults with corporations on employee health and well-being. Dr. Starrett’s work is not limited to coaches and athletes; his methods apply equally well to children, desk jockeys, and anyone dealing with injury and chronic pain. He believes that every human being should know how to move and be able to perform basic maintenance on themselves. Harness Your Digital Empathy and Learn Skills to Be a Better Boss, Employee, and Colleague in a Virtual or Hybrid Office How do you manage a poor performer over Zoom? How do you casually deliver positive feedback via Slack? What’s the most professional use of a gif? Two things are certain with the shift in office structure: First, we will never go back to “the way things were.” Second, we all must learn to live in a virtual workplace. If we are managers, that means we also need to know how to communicate with, motivate, and coach virtual teams. In the words of Dale Carnegie, how do you “win friends and influence people” in a virtual office? How to Win Friends and Manage Remotely shares real-life examples, scientifically proven ideas, and distillations of tried-and-true business tenets, including why expressing empathy is the most important factor in managing and working with others—all mapped to a new virtual-first office. McKenna’s global marketing career has spanned the spectrum of start-ups to corporates, exposing her to successful remote, in-person, and mixed teams. Her own management experience, leading teams around the world, has provided the foundation for her speaking and coaching, but she’s built a structured approach to this new world of remote-first work with deep dives into research and theory from psychologists, great business minds, and the social sciences. She combines well respected and applicable theories of management and leadership with practical solutions for a new normal of workers out of the office, either some of the time or all of the time. McKenna’s approach starts with strategic planning and a commitment to frameworks, but cumulates with concrete ideas for more effective virtual leadership, allowing leaders to use their own intuition and judgement more wisely. In her insightful new book GET IT DONE: Surprising Lessons from the Science of Motivation (January 4, Little Brown Spark), scientist and University of Chicago Booth professor of behavioral science Dr. Ayelet Fishbach takes on the questions that plague us most: What happens when the person you most want to influence is yourself? How do you know where to start? How do you carry on in the face of roadblocks and distractions? How do you decide which tasks and ambitions to prioritize? We were joined today by Dr. Ayelet Fishbach to discuss her new book, GET IT DONE: Surprising Lessons from the Science of Motivation (
Dr. Ayelet Fishbach, a leading motivational scientist at University of Chicago, has dedicated much of her extensive career to answering some of the biggest questions on the topic of motivation. Setting and achieving goals—at work, at home, and in relationships—is harder than it seems. Countless books and articles have been written on the subject of motivating others, but most are not penned by serious behavioral scientists at the forefront of this discipline. As Angela Duckworth says, “I don't know anyone, scientist or otherwise, who knows more than Ayelet Fishbach about the psychology of goals.”

The COVID-19 pandemic forced an unprecedented experiment that reshaped white-collar work and turned remote work into a kind of “new normal.” Now comes the hard part. We were joined today by author, Peter Cappelli to discuss his new book, THE FUTURE OF THE OFFICE Work from Home, Remote Work, and the Hard Choices We All Face. Many employees want to continue this “new normal” and keep working remotely, and most at least want the ability to work occasionally from home. But for employers, the benefits of employees working from home, or hybrid approaches, are not so obvious. What should both groups do? A prescient new book, The Future of the Office: Work from Home, Remote Work, and the Hard Choices We All Face by Peter Cappelli lays out the facts to provide everyone involved with a vision of their futures. Cappelli unveils the surprising tradeoffs both employers and employees may have to accept to get what they want. Peter Cappelli is the George W. Taylor Professor of Management at the Wharton School and director of Wharton’s Center for Human Resources. He writes a monthly column on workforce issues for Human Resource Executive Online and is a regular contributor to the Wall Street Journal and the Harvard Business Review. Why do some team members not get along? What is the best way to get new teams and ad-hoc teams to maximize their performance in the least amount of time? How can meetings be designed to achieve useful outcomes? We were joined today by author, Valerie Patrick to discuss her book, When Bad Teams Happen to Good People. Teams are the source of problem-solving and innovation that today’s organizations need to survive and thrive in an increasingly complex and challenging marketplace. Teamwork is hard because there is no magic formula or step-by-step procedure to ensure results. Think of a programmer asked to develop new features for a cell phone: they write new code, test the code, troubleshoot problems encountered, revise the code, and repeat the testing process until the new features work without problems. Similarly, a team leader asked to deliver specified outcomes develops a plan, runs team meetings, troubleshoots problems encountered, revises the plan, and repeats until the team outcomes are achieved. The difference is that a programmer has tools to help streamline troubleshooting, while team leaders do not—until now. We were joined today by author, Richard Culatta to discuss his book, Digital for Good: Raising Kids to Thrive in an Online World When it comes to raising children in a digital world, every parent feels underprepared and overwhelmed. We worry that our children will become addicted to online games, be victims of cyberbullying, or get lost down the rabbit hole of social media. We warn them about all the things they shouldn't do online, but we don't do nearly enough to teach them the skills of digital well-being. It's time to start a new conversation. In Digital for Good, EdTech expert Richard Culatta argues that technology can be a powerful tool for learning, solving humanity's toughest problems, and bringing us closer together. He offers a refreshingly positive framework for preparing kids to be successful in a digital world—one that encourages them to use technology proactively and productively—by outlining five qualities every young person should develop in order to become a thriving, contributing digital citizen: Be balanced: understand when and how much tech use is healthy Stay informed: discern between true and false information Be inclusive: treat others with respect and kindness online Be engaged: use tech to strengthen family relationships and community connections Stay alert: exercise caution and create safe digital spaces for others This practical guide will help parents and children discover the path to becoming effective digital citizens, all while making our online world a better place. We were joined today by author, Bruce Tulgan to discuss his book The Art of Being Indispensable at Work: Win Influence, Beat Overcommitment, and Get the Right Things Done Today, more than ever, we all want to be viewed as an indispensable go-to person. However, in this new world of work, getting things done is more complex than ever. While in many companies there is a clear organizational chart, in reality, day-to-day working relationships are much more tangled. Trying to become indispensable means thinking we need to say yes to everything and everyone. But, collaborating with an increasing number of people leads us to being overwhelmed and prone to burnout. How can we win influence, tackle overcommitment, and get the right things done? How can we build teams of go-to people below, around and above us? That’s the art of being indispensable at work. Bruce Tulgan is a bestselling author, an adviser to business leaders all over the world, and a sought-after keynote speaker. Since 1995, Tulgan has worked with tens of thousands of leaders and managers in hundreds of organizations, ranging from Aetna to Walmart and from the US Army to the YMCA. He lectures at the Yale Graduate School of Management, as well as other academic institutions. We were joined today by author, Ron Lieber to discuss his book The Price You Pay For College: An Entirely New Road Map for the Biggest Financial Decision Your Family Will Ever Make . Sending a teenager to a flagship state university for four years of on-campus living costs more than $100,000 in many parts of the United States. Meanwhile, families of freshmen attending scores of selective private colleges will spend triple that―over $300,000. It’s a hard pill to swallow but the cost of college is probably the biggest expense that a family will incur over its lifetime. Add to this the effects of the COVID-19 crisis on incomes, and the stakes are even higher. Ron Lieber is the author of THE PRICE YOU PAY FOR COLLEGE (Harper, 1/26/2021), and The Opposite of Spoiled. He is the “Your Money” columnist for the New York Times. Two of his books have been New York Times bestsellers, and he is a three-time winner of the Gerald Loeb award, business journalism’s highest honor. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife, New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor, and their two daughters. We were joined today by author, Laura Kriska to discuss her book The Business of We. Us versus Them gaps have always impacted in the American workplace – Sales versus Marketing, Manufacturing versus Engineering, Human Resources versus Legal – but the demand on stakeholders to address a wide range of culture gaps is more urgent than ever before due to the impact of the pandemic, Black Lives Matter protests, and the most divisive election in modern times. No matter what your politics, one thing is clear— the old tools just don’t work; a new approach to diversity, cultural difference, and inclusion is urgently needed. What can business leaders do to create true synergy among the diverse and often fiercely divided members of their workforce? LAURA KRISKA is an internationally recognized expert and leading consultant on cross-cultural relations with more than 30 years of experience bridging gaps in diverse workplaces. College is one of the biggest investments that families make, and yet many students spend much of their time in college figuring out what they want to do. There’s very little time between high school and college to explore career interests. 30% of undergrads change their major at least once within three years of initial enrollment. 40% of bachelors’ degree holders would study a different major if they had to do it all over again. Megan O'Connor is serving as an Entrepreneur in Residence at Kaplan, one of the world’s largest and most diversified educational services providers. She is currently spearheading development of Kaplan’s new Boost program, designed for pre-college students to help bridge the gap between the college experience and work readiness. Prior to joining Kaplan, Megan founded, led and sold Clark, a provider of end-to-end operation software, education services and coaching for teachers who want to grow their tutoring business. It's true that Maria Konnikova had never actually played poker before and didn't even know the rules when she approached Erik Seidel, Poker Hall of Fame inductee and winner of tens of millions of dollars in earnings, and convinced him to be her mentor. But she knew her man: a famously thoughtful and broad-minded player, he was intrigued by her pitch that she wasn't interested in making money so much as learning about life. She had faced a stretch of personal bad luck, and her reflections on the role of chance had led her to a giant of game theory, who pointed her to poker as the ultimate master class in learning to distinguish between what can be controlled and what can't. And she certainly brought something to the table, including a Ph.D. in psychology and an acclaimed and growing body of work on human behavior and how to hack it. So Seidel was in, and soon she was down the rabbit hole with him, into the wild, fiercely competitive, overwhelmingly masculine world of high-stakes Texas Hold'em, their initial end point the following year's World Series of Poker. Maria Konnikova is a writer and student of human behavior, and ultimately the point was to render her incredible journey into a container for its invaluable lessons. The biggest bluff of all, she learned, is that skill is enough. Bad cards will come our way, but keeping our focus on how we play them and not on the outcome will keep us moving through many a dark patch, until the luck once again breaks our way. Money Matters Episode 273 -Financial Health and Optimism Even in an Economic Downturn W/ Michelle Gielan
Lasting effects from the worst economic downturn in our lifetime are having a staggering effect on financial health. In fact, a recent survey from Frost Bank shows current financial health as a result of the pandemic is low, with two in five (40%) Americans citing their financial situation as fair or poor. In a time when much is out of our control, we can control our thoughts and actions which are proven to make a difference. Frost’s research found that people who talk about their finances are 2x more likely to have better financial health. And, the people talking about money have something in common – optimism. Michelle Gielan had a dream job at CBS News—and quit. As an anchor of two national news programs, she was disturbed by the amount of negativity in the news. She didn’t want a child walking through the room while she was doing her job, hearing her continually telling negative stories about the world. But her time at CBS News also showed her the incredible power we have to create positive change by broadcasting a worldview that is more empowered, optimistic, and solution-focused. Michelle left her job as a broadcaster at CBS News to study positive psychology—the science of happiness and human potential—under Dr. Martin Seligman (known as the founder of positive psychology) at the University of Pennsylvania Positive Psychology Center. Michelle’s research shows how your optimistic, empowered mindset is the most valuable resource in creating happiness and forward progress. Today, she runs the Institute for Applied Positive Research, investigating how mindset fuels happiness and success at organizations including Google, Boston Children’s Hospital, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and Pepsi Co.—and the results have been remarkable. Michelle has a regular series in Harvard Business Review on happiness at work and was named one of top 10 authors on resilience by HBR. She is the author of Broadcasting Happiness: The Science of Igniting and Sustaining Positive Change. Michelle has a B.S. in Computer Engineering from Tufts University and a Masters in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the United States reached a wind power generating capacity of 82,000 megawatts in 2016. That year over 8,200 megawatts of wind capacity was installed, with the top states in terms of capacity being Texas, Iowa, Oklahoma, California, and Kansas. The first commercial offshore wind facility was completed as well, in Rhode Island, and 41 states had utility scale wind power available. We were joined by Daryl Losaw and Samuel Gerbus of IceWind. The US operation will be based out of San Marcos, Texas, and helmed by Daryl Losaw, a modular home builder, investor, consultant, and entrepreneur. Losaw notes, “when I first saw the IceWind turbines in Iceland, I knew I had to bring them to market in the US. They are perfectly complementary with solar, a great stand-alone solution for very windy places, and a handy answer for small energy outdoor applications that will cut down on carbon from generators, diesel engines, and maintenance calls.” IceWind’s US project manager Samuel Gerbus who spent several months in Iceland with the IceWind team last year notes, “We are so thrilled to bring the power, beauty, and reliability of IceWind’s turbines to the US, and know that this will be just the start of a new pillar of renewable energy in the US, home installed wind power.” To find out more about ICEWIND visit: More about Houston Money Week visit: www.Houstonmoneyweek.org http://www.cheatsheet.com/personal-fi... Covid 19 Response Special Edition - Staying Active, Mobile and Fit during the Stay at Home Order W/ Professor Pablo Silva and Kailiee Wong
At this point many of us are restless, anxious and bored. We might be going a little stir crazy. We have that feeling like we want to go outside and play, go to the gym or we might even miss going into the office. What can we do about it? How important is it to stay active right now? We were joined today by IBJJF World Champion, Professor Pablo Silva and former linebacker for the Houston Texans and Founder of both the Athletic Room and the Regen Room, Kailee Wong. Pablo started his jiu jitsu journey at the age of 14 in his small hometown Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil. At age 16, Pablo made the difficult decision of leaving his hometown and his family to train BJJ full time at the Gracie Barra HQ in Belo Horizonte. It was then that Pablo set his goal of becoming a Black Belt World Champion. In 2009, Pablo received his black belt and just one year later achieved his goal of winning the IBJJF World Championship at the Black Belt Adult level. Pablo has won all the major tournaments in the sport of jiu jitsu as a black belt. Pablo is the only IBJJF Adult Black Belt World Champion living and teaching in Texas. The curriculum at Pablo Silva BJJ is geared toward sport jiu jitsu and stems from Pablo’s own competition experiences. Pablo is a firm believer that jiu jitsu can change people’s lives for the better. Whether it’s self-esteem, health, mental, or emotional issues, he believes that jiu jitsu can help everyone in one way or another. Pablo strives to make a positive impact on this world by sharing his love for jiu jitsu with his students. To Find out more about Pablo Silva visit: http://pablosilvabjj.com/ Acceptance of the status quo is not in Kailee Wong’s DNA. Kailee spent nine seasons as an NFL linebacker for the Houston Texans and Minnesota Vikings’ organizations, but it was his six years at a desk in corporate America that caused the most harm to his body. Ignited by an obvious need and grounded in his passion for business, Kailee founded the Athletic Room to ensure everyone can get back to the activities and hobbies they love without the unnecessary pain. How do customers want your brand to navigate the political landscape? Christine Wise discusses the surprising research findings from Seattle agency DNA's deep dive into when and why corporate political advocacy works... and when it doesn't.
We were joined today by Christine Wise, the agency's Chief Strategy Officer to talk about Foresight 2020 - a national representative study on the attitudes and opinions of 2,000 Americans with regard to brands and political stances.
Foresight 2020 research shows that the overwhelming majority of consumers agree on the importance of many core values and see a number of these shared values as “under threat” today. When considering the unprecedented political divisiveness that is so pervasive today, it is no surprise people are hoping for brands to build common ground. “As we look ahead to what is certain to be a highly-charged political climate in 2020, we saw an opportunity to use data and insights to help marketers and brands create winning strategies for the year ahead,” explained Alan Brown, CEO and co-founder of DNA. “Just as political candidates are courting independent votes, brands can broaden their relevance to more people by championing common ground than by firmly planting a flag on the side of any single issue or candidate. Staying authentic and doubling down on important shared values may be the best way for brands to add value and bring people together in today’s landmine filled political landscape.” For starters, our political system and political division is the number one issue facing the country when looking at the combination of what is both important and polarizing. As people look ahead to 2020, most anticipate things will continue to get worse with only 8% of people disagreeing with the statement that “the election year will further divide and polarize our country.” “Although there are specific groups of people that will immediately applaud and reward a brand for taking a strong political or societal stance,” explains Christine Wise, Chief Strategy Officer at DNA and leader of the study, “many have a degree of skepticism about brand activism with 53% agreeing that ‘Too many brands use societal issues as a marketing ploy to sell their product/service.’” Cultivating unity is the number one thing on a list of what people want from brands with 54% agreeing “Brands should help build common ground and avoid taking sides.” According to the survey, DNA sees an opportunity for brands to be the change people want to see by protecting and projecting shared values especially those that are viewed as most important and under threat today. These values include privacy, preserving the environment, safety, fairness, open-mindedness, independence, compassion, and honesty. Noted Ms. Wise, “We see rich and fertile ground for brands to advocate around our shared values. DNA has analyzed a large range of values and can guide brands to those that are most important and also seen as most under threat in 2020 based on a wide range of factors. Generation cohorts, where people live, and political affiliation reveal both differences and highlight commonalities that provide a framework for how brands can succeed and drive relevance in 2020.” Personal Issues Remain More Pressing than Political Issues As concerning as the state of politics is for many, only 13% of Americans strongly agree that they’re “losing sleep about what is happening now and what lies ahead in 2020.” This is in part because personal problems are more pressing and political fatigue has already set in. Improving physical health and improving personal finances top the list of personal priorities for 2020 across all generations. Younger generations (Gen Z and Millennials) differ from older generations with additional importance placed on advancing their job/career, improving their personal relationships, trying new things, maintaining a sense of balance, and improving their mental health. In addition, DNA found that brands should consider how their employees feel - not just what their customers feel - about political advocacy. With a tight talent pool, keeping the entire enterprise in mind is vital for companies as 37% of Americans overall would be proud to be employed by a company that publicly advocated in support of causes or issues I care about. Research methodology The Foresight for 2020 project is a nationally representative quantitative study of 2,000 Americans, ages 18+. The quantitative survey was fielded in August 2019. The study examines the current state of American sentiment, the values we hold most dear and those we feel are under threat today, how we perceive the issues of the day, and what we see as the role/responsibility of brands during this unique moment in time. The survey has a margin of error of 2% at a 95% confidence level. In addition to the quantitative study, Foresight 2020 also includes: · Social data intelligence analysis of online conversations leveraging NetBase platform · Analysis of political polling and ongoing tracking of US consumer sentiment · Case study examples of the intersection of brands and issue-based politics · Qualitative interviews with academics and leaders in brand safety

Probability-based or safety-first? What trade-offs exist between these two dramatically different philosophies for retirement income planning? Wade Pfau discusses his new book - Safety-First Retirement Planning: An Integrated Approach for a Worry-Free Retirement.
We were joined today by bestselling author Wade D. Pfau, Ph.D., CFA, RICP. Dr. Pfau is the director of the Retirement Income Certified Professional designation and a Professor of Retirement Income at The American College of Financial Services in King of Prussia, PA. As well, he is a Principal and Director for McLean Asset Management. He holds a doctorate in economics from Princeton University and publishes frequently in a wide variety of academic and practitioner research journals on topics related to retirement income. He hosts the Retirement Researcher website, and is a contributor to Forbes, Advisor Perspectives, Journal of Financial Planning, and an Expert Panelist for the Wall Street Journal. He is the author of the books, Safety-First Retirement Planning: An Integrated Approach for a Worry-Free Retirement, How Much Can I Spend in Retirement? A Guide to Investment-Based Retirement Income Strategies, and Reverse Mortgages: How to Use Reverse Mortgages to Secure Your Retirement.
About Safety-First Retirement Income Planning To learn two fundamentally different philosophies for retirement income planning, which I call probability-based and safety-first, diverge on the critical issue of where a retirement plan is best served: in the risk/reward trade-offs of a diversified and aggressive investment portfolio that relies primarily on the stock market, or in the contractual protections of insurance products that integrate the power of risk pooling and actuarial science alongside investments. The probability-based approach is generally better understood by the public. It advocates using an aggressive investment portfolio with a large allocation to stocks to meet retirement goals. My earlier book How Much Can I Spend in Retirement? A Guide to Investment-Based Retirement Strategies provides an extensive investigation of probability-based approaches. But this investments-only attitude is not the optimal way to build a retirement income plan. There are pitfalls in retirement that we are less familiar with during the accumulation years. The nature of risk changes. Longevity risk is the possibility of living longer than planned, which could mean not having resources to maintain the retiree’s standard of living. And once retirement distributions begin, market downturns in the early years can disproportionately harm retirement sustainability. This is sequence-of-returns risk, and it acts to amplify the impacts of market volatility in retirement. Traditional wealth management is not equipped to handle these new risks in a fulfilling way. More assets are required to cover spending goals over a possibly costly retirement triggered by a long life and poor market returns. And yet, there is no assurance that assets will be sufficient. For retirees who are worried about outliving their wealth, probability-based strategies can become excessively conservative and stressful. This book focuses on the other option: safety-first retirement planning. Safety-first advocates support a more bifurcated approach to building retirement income plans that integrates insurance with investments, providing lifetime income protections to cover spending. With risk pooling through insurance, retirees effectively pay an insurance premium that will provide a benefit to support spending in otherwise costly retirements that could deplete an unprotected investment portfolio. Insurance companies can pool sequence and longevity risks across a large base of retirees, much like a traditional defined-benefit company pension plan or Social Security, allowing for retirement spending that is more closely aligned with averages. When bonds are replaced with insurance-based risk pooling assets, retirees can improve the odds of meeting their spending goals while also supporting more legacy at the end of life, especially in the event of a longer-than-average retirement. We walk through this thought process and logic in steps, investigating three basic ways to fund a retirement spending goal: with bonds, with a diversified investment portfolio, and with risk pooling through annuities and life insurance. We consider the potential role for different types of annuities including simple income annuities, variable annuities, and fixed index annuities. I explain how different annuities work and how readers can evaluate them. We also examine the potential for whole life insurance to contribute to a retirement income plan. When we properly consider the range of risks introduced after retirement, I conclude that the integrated strategies preferred by safety-first advocates support more efficient retirement outcomes. Safety-first retirement planning helps to meet financial goals with less worry. This book explains how to evaluate different insurance options and implement these solutions into an integrated retirement plan.

Beyond the Content shows readers how to use mindfulness to identify and cope with hindering thoughts and emotions--what author Logan Thompson calls "passengers." Does your company throw around new ideas until one sounds just good enough to execute and scale to everyone? In Start at the End, technology executive and behavioral scientist Matt Wallaert argues that the purpose of everything is behavior change. By starting with outcomes instead of processes, the most effective companies understand what people want to do and why they aren't already doing it, then build products and services to bridge the gap. Wallaert is a behavioral psychologist who has led product design at organizations ranging from startups like Clover Health to industry leaders such as Microsoft. Whether dissecting the success behind Uber's ridesharing service or Flamin' Hot Cheetos, he underscores with clarity and humor how this approach can improve the way we work and live.
