How much can you spend in retirement? Naturally, this is an essential question for those approaching this important life transition. Essentially, if you wish to retire one day, you are increasingly responsible for figuring out how to save during your working years and convert your savings into sustainable income for an ever-lengthening number of retirement years. The nature of risk also changes in retirement, as the lifestyle of retirees become more vulnerable to the impacts of market volatility, unknown longevity, and spending shocks. Retirees have one opportunity to build a successful plan. It is not an easy task, but it is manageable.

On today’s show we talked with Author Dr. Wade Pfau about his new book How to Spend Money Wisely in Retirement.

Dr. Wade D. Pfau, CFA®, is a Professor of Retirement Income in the PhD in Financial and Retirement Planning program at The American College of Financial Services. He is also a contributor to the The College’s Retirement Income Certified Professional® (RICP®) designation program curriculum.

Dr. Pfau is a co-editor of the Journal of Personal Finance. He has spoken at the national conferences of organizations for financial professionals such as the CFA Institute, FPA, NAPFA, AICPA-PFP, and AFS. He also publishes frequently in a wide variety of academic and practitioner research journals. He hosts the Retirement Researcher blog, and is a monthly columnist for Advisor Perspectives, a RetireMentor for MarketWatch, a contributor to Forbes, and an Expert Panelist for The Wall Street Journal. His research has been discussed in outlets that include print editions of The EconomistThe New York TimesThe Wall Street Journal, and Money Magazine.

Money has the power to destroy, but it can also be an incredibly effective tool for social change. Impact investing – the support of social and environmental projects with a financial return – has become a hot topic on the global stage; poised to eclipse traditional aid by ten times in the next decade. And it has the potential to completely restructure the global economy, making social and environmental responsibility integral to how we move money through society, rather than an afterthought.

In her book REAL IMPACT: The New Economics of Social Change, Morgan Simon argues that impact investing will do a lot of good – if we can get it right. An impact investor with 17 years of experience who has influenced over $150 billion from endowments, families, and foundations – who also manages funds for members of the seventh wealthiest family in America – Simon sees warning signs that impact investment is at a crucial turning point. As investors focus on growth and acceptance, it’s actually in danger of replicating the same mistakes of traditional charity and finance that impact investment was designed to correct. And without the right guiding principles, it has the potential to do more harm than good

On today’s show we talked with Author Morgan Simon about her book Real Impact - The New Economics of Social Change.

Morgan Simon is a widely recognized leader in impact investment who builds bridges between finance and social justice. Over the past seventeen years, she has influenced over $150 billion from high-net-worth individuals, foundations, and endowments. She supports Pi Investments and the Libra Foundation, and is also co- founder and chair of the nonprofit Transform Finance.

It’s not a revelation to learn that any comedian offstage is a shy weirdo.  What’s utterly revealing and totally fantastic about this film is seeing Gilbert Gottfried's marriage, which is a model of affection and good sense in the face of eccentricity.  Every couple should see this. Every marriage should be more like his.  This is the rare film where a look at a performer’s private life is not what you expect at all, and also weirdly inspiring.  I loved this. Ira Glass

Legendary comedian Gilbert Gottfried has had quite the career. Rocketing to fame in the 1980s, he was thrust into the public consciousness almost immediately thanks to his brash personality, unique worldview, and off-kilter comic timing. Now, foul-mouthed and unapologetic after decades of flying solo in both his work and in his personal life, Gilbert has shockingly reinvented himself…as a family man.

Director Neil Berkeley’s Gilbert reveals an unexpected side to the iconic comedian. The film peeks behind the larger-than-life persona at a more personal story about growing up in Brooklyn and becoming a husband and father late in life. Gottfried’s singular outlook on life and his ability to bring humor to even the darkest situations has, at times, gotten him into trouble. Still he soldiers on, an expert craftsman at bringing his audience to the edge (and sometimes pushing them over). Gilbert strips the comedic character away to reveal the man behind it. Berkeley allows the audience an intimate — even vulnerable — view of Gottfried out of character.

On today’s show we talked with Director Neil Berkeley about his upcoming documentary Gilbert which will be showing on November 8th in Houston at The Alamo Drafthouse.

Neil Berkeley, Producer/ Director/ Writer

Neil Berkeley is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker and entrepreneur. His first feature film, Beauty Is Embarrassing, premiered at SXSW in 2012 and chronicles the life and times of the inspiring artist Wayne White. The film won several Best Documentary awards and was featured in PBS’ Independent Lens in January of 2013. His second feature, Harmontown, premiered at SXSW in 2014 and follows self-destructive TV writer Dan Harmon on an emotional, cross-country journey of self-discovery.  He is currently in production on his fourth feature documentary, currently titled Death Is a Door. The film is the story of how American rock music became a lifestyle for many young Cubans in the late ’80s. The decisions they made led to rampant police abuse combined with oppression from the government and eventually drove several hundred of them to self-inject with HIV.

Berkeley is also a successful commercial and promo director and has worked with brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac and Kraft Foods. He is the owner of BRKLY, a design based production company focused on developing marketing campaigns for network and cable television. The company has helped launch some of TV’s most popular shows, including Brother vs. Brother, Scandal, Project Runway, Top Chef and many more.

For many marketing professionals, "science" is a four-letter word. They see brand-building as an unteachable art guided by their intuition and experience. But at its core, marketing aims to seed ideas into people's minds, make them feel a certain way, and, ultimately, get them to act.

Our guest today was Daryl Weber, author of Brand Seduction: How Neuroscience Can Help Marketers Build Memorable Brands. We discussed the role of brand in the presidential election, and much more. In Brand Seduction, Daryl reveals the latest psychological and neuroscientific discoveries about how our minds process brand information and make decisions, and the important roles our emotions and unconscious play in our selections.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates food waste in the United States to be about 30 to 40 percent of the food supply. An estimated 133 billion pounds of food from stores, restaurants and homes was wasted in 2010, according to the USDA. The amount of uneaten food from homes and restaurants in 2008 was valued at $390 per customer.

Our guest for today was Barbara Heitman Bronstein, founder of Second Servings Houston. Raised in New York, Barbara has called Houston home for over 30 years. She graduated from Tufts University before earning an MBA in Marketing from New York University. After a successful career marketing some of America's leading brands for Unilever, Mars, and Coca-Cola, Barbara piloted a banquet food rescue program known as "Banquet Bounty for the Hungry", the precursor to Second Servings of Houston.

Second Servings of Houston strives to alleviate hunger and reduce waste by rescuing excess prepared food from hotels, caterers, sports venues, cafeterias, food retailers, and other regulated food businesses, and delivering it promptly and safely to approved charitable meal sites.

Drawing from examples gathered over two decades of turning a weekly Fort Worth comedy show into a full-time business that has them traveling the world and serving as Entrepreneurs in Residence at the business school at Texas Christian University, co-authors David Wilk, David Ahearn, and Frank Ford demonstrate how “yes, and” thinking helps improve communication skills, facilitate creative problem solving, and generate new ideas that can refresh and rejuvenate.  From understanding the value of open minded, active listening (the ability to say “yes” to anything and mean it); to a willingness to offer out-of-the-box ideas without prejudgment (putting the “and” into action); to demonstrating authentic respect for the ideas and intentions of others, Happy Accidents shows how the same elements that make for great teamwork on stage prove to be immensely successful strategies in the workplace and board room.

Frank Ford has had a successful career in the entertainment industry for the last 25 years and is one of the founding members and owner of Four Day Weekend, a comedy institution in Texas. He has also studied at the renowned Second City Conservatory in Chicago and taught advanced classes at the Four Day Weekend Training Center.

As a professional actor, Frank has appeared in numerous commercial spots, television shows and films. In addition, he has received critical-acclaim for his original comedy revues, comedy album, short films and acting roles.

Over the years, Frank has been recognized for his writing, including the sale of an original comedy to 20th Century FOX. Frank has recently finished writing a feature film, is working on a pilot treatment for HBO and is in the process of publishing his first book entitled, Happy Accidents, which teaches people how use the philosophy of improvisation in a positive way to enrich their lives.

One of the many things that makes divorce such a complicated and notoriously confusing thing is the array of new terms, acronyms, and phrases tossed around throughout the process. Whether you're wondering if you are in the right career, looking to change job roles, or trying to reduce conflict and improve relationships at work and at home, you must begin by fully understanding your own interests and needs, and how they drive your ultimate happiness as well as unleash your stress points. Used by millions of people worldwide, The Birkman Method is the only personality-assessment tool that reaches beyond self-described behavior and situational analysis to unravel the DNA underpinning workplace satisfaction and productivity.

Sharon Birkman Fink has served as Birkman International, Inc.'s President and CEO since 2002. Originally trained as a singer/musician, Sharon was a National Merit Scholar and Woodrow Wilson Fellow who completed a Master's degree in Music at the University of Texas. She asserts that "any child raised in a family business is always a part of the business" and this makes her Birkman tenure very long indeed.
She is married to international opera performer and 2012 Grammy award winner, Richard Paul Fink, a dramatic baritone who sings regularly at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and has three daughters. Sharon is involved with several charitable and civic organizations in the Houston area and is member of the Board of Directors of the Escape Foundation. It is widely acknowledged that there is both an ‘art’ and a ‘science’ to financial planning. Technical knowledge – the “science” – is crucial to delivering the technically accurate advice to clients. But the best advice in the world is meaningless if the financial advisor can’t master the “art” of delivering it in a skillful manner – leading a client to actually take action and improve their financial well-being. Yet despite its label as “art”, the reality is that how best to deliver financial advice advice can itself be subjected to scientific scrutiny. Which is beginning to happen, with the emergence of several “financial counseling laboratories” in educational institutions across the country.

Derek is the founder of Conscious Capital, a fee-only boutique wealth management firm that specializes in socially conscious investing. In addition to helping their clients manage their investments in a manner that is consistent with their values, they also provide comprehensive financial planning to help their clients grow and protect their hard-earned wealth.

Today's retirement looks nothing like your parents' experience. Our longer life expectancy and increasing intellectual capital have transformed our notion of the golden years. Often we're just not ready for a life without work. We fear outliving our money and our meaning. We want to stay productive (whatever that means to us personally) well into the future and for baby boomers and the following generations, that future is closer than we think. No matter your definition of financial confidence, with the right tools and approach, you can create the retirement of your dreams: your memorable encore. The Encore Curve examines two crucial questions: Now what am I going to do? and will I have enough money?

Andy Raub has helped countless individuals plan for their retirement and manage their investments. As an early Baby Boomer, he understands the fears most retirees now face, which prompted him to write a book to help them reset their life goals and reorganize their money so they can live with renewed purpose.

"The road to the future leads us smack into the wall. We simply ricochet off the alternatives that destiny offers: a demographic explosion that triggers social chaos and spreads death, nuclear delirium, and the quasi-annihilation of the species. Our survival is no more than a question of 25, 50, or perhaps 100 years." Jacques Cousteau

If you really want to understand President Donald Trump's finances, the first two pages of his federal income tax return isn't the best place to look. Fraud can happen anywhere—even in the most successful companies. Most businesses, large and small, lose an average of 5% of their annual gross revenues to insider fraud.

The worst part? The Thief in Your Company is most likely the person you trust the most.

Forensic accountant Tiffany Couch is a sleuth with an adding machine. She has seen theft in many forms, but what sticks with her the most is not the fraud schemes or the dollar losses. It’s the victims who all experience the same emotional devastation that these crimes leave in their wake.

Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever; obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup. He explains what research has shown about our addiction to sweets. He clarifies the arguments against sugar, corrects misconceptions about the relationship between sugar and weight loss; and provides the perspective necessary to make informed decisions about sugar as individuals and as a society.

GARY TAUBES is cofounder of the Nutrition Science Initiative (NuSI). He's an award-winning science and health journalist, the author of Why We Get Fat and Good Calories, Bad Calories, and a former staff writer for Discover and correspondent for the journal Science. His writing has also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, and Esquire, and has been included in numerous Best of anthologies, including The Best of the Best American Science Writing (2010). He has received three Science in Society Journalism Awards from the National Association of Science Writers. He is also the recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Award in Health Policy Research. He lives in Oakland, California.

After five years living in a studio that was 90 square feet (12' x 7.5' - roughly the perimeter of a Honda Accord), people sent me messages from all over the world, amazed at how I was able to fit my entire life in a tiny space. Some asked for advice, others thought I was nuts, saying that for the same price I could live in a larger space elsewhere. What most folks didn't realize was that I may have been living in a tiny space, but I was living large. 90 Lessons for Living Large in 90 Square Feet (...or more), part memoir/part "want to" guide, gives 90 lessons that I learned about organizing, downsizing and "living large" as a result of living in that tiny space. Hope they help you too.

Today we were joined by Author, Felice Cohen. We discussed her book 90 Lessons for Living Large in 90 Square Feet.
