MONEY MATTERS with Christopher Hensley

College is one of the biggest investments that families make, and yet many students spend much of their time in college figuring out what they want to do. There’s very little time between high school and college to explore career interests. 30% of undergrads change their major at least once within three years of initial enrollment. 40% of bachelors’ degree holders would study a different major if they had to do it all over again. Megan O'Connor is serving as an Entrepreneur in Residence at Kaplan, one of the world’s largest and most diversified educational services providers. She is currently spearheading development of Kaplan’s new Boost program, designed for pre-college students to help bridge the gap between the college experience and work readiness. Prior to joining Kaplan, Megan founded, led and sold Clark, a provider of end-to-end operation software, education services and coaching for teachers who want to grow their tutoring business. Before Clark, Megan was a founding partner of New York-based startup studio Human Ventures and Director of Development at the nonprofit Pencils of Promise. She has an MPA from NYU's Wagner School of Public Service and a BA from Santa Clara University. It's true that Maria Konnikova had never actually played poker before and didn't even know the rules when she approached Erik Seidel, Poker Hall of Fame inductee and winner of tens of millions of dollars in earnings, and convinced him to be her mentor. But she knew her man: a famously thoughtful and broad-minded player, he was intrigued by her pitch that she wasn't interested in making money so much as learning about life. She had faced a stretch of personal bad luck, and her reflections on the role of chance had led her to a giant of game theory, who pointed her to poker as the ultimate master class in learning to distinguish between what can be controlled and what can't. And she certainly brought something to the table, including a Ph.D. in psychology and an acclaimed and growing body of work on human behavior and how to hack it. So Seidel was in, and soon she was down the rabbit hole with him, into the wild, fiercely competitive, overwhelmingly masculine world of high-stakes Texas Hold'em, their initial end point the following year's World Series of Poker.

Maria Konnikova is a writer and student of human behavior, and ultimately the point was to render her incredible journey into a container for its invaluable lessons. The biggest bluff of all, she learned, is that skill is enough. Bad cards will come our way, but keeping our focus on how we play them and not on the outcome will keep us moving through many a dark patch, until the luck once again breaks our way.

Lasting effects from the worst economic downturn in our lifetime are having a staggering effect on financial health. In fact, a recent survey from Frost Bank shows current financial health as a result of the pandemic is low, with two in five (40%) Americans citing their financial situation as fair or poor.

In a time when much is out of our control, we can control our thoughts and actions which are proven to make a difference. Frost’s research found that people who talk about their finances are 2x more likely to have better financial health. And, the people talking about money have something in common – optimism.

Michelle Gielan had a dream job at CBS News—and quit. As an anchor of two national news programs, she was disturbed by the amount of negativity in the news. She didn’t want a child walking through the room while she was doing her job, hearing her continually telling negative stories about the world. But her time at CBS News also showed her the incredible power we have to create positive change by broadcasting a worldview that is more empowered, optimistic, and solution-focused.

Michelle left her job as a broadcaster at CBS News to study positive psychology—the science of happiness and human potential—under Dr. Martin Seligman (known as the founder of positive psychology) at the University of Pennsylvania Positive Psychology Center.

Michelle’s research shows how your optimistic, empowered mindset is the most valuable resource in creating happiness and forward progress. Today, she runs the Institute for Applied Positive Research, investigating how mindset fuels happiness and success at organizations including Google, Boston Children’s Hospital, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and Pepsi Co.—and the results have been remarkable.  Michelle has a regular series in Harvard Business Review on happiness at work and was named one of top 10 authors on resilience by HBR.  She is the author of Broadcasting Happiness: The Science of Igniting and Sustaining Positive Change.

Michelle has a B.S. in Computer Engineering from Tufts University and a Masters in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the United States reached a wind power generating capacity of 82,000 megawatts in 2016. That year over 8,200 megawatts of wind capacity was installed, with the top states in terms of capacity being Texas, Iowa, Oklahoma, California, and Kansas. The first commercial offshore wind facility was completed as well, in Rhode Island, and 41 states had utility scale wind power available.

We were joined by Daryl Losaw and Samuel Gerbus of IceWind. The US operation will be based out of San Marcos, Texas, and helmed by Daryl Losaw, a modular home builder, investor, consultant, and entrepreneur. Losaw notes, “when I first saw the IceWind turbines in Iceland, I knew I had to bring them to market in the US. They are perfectly complementary with solar, a great stand-alone solution for very windy places, and a handy answer for small energy outdoor applications that will cut down on carbon from generators, diesel engines, and maintenance calls.”

IceWind’s US project manager Samuel Gerbus who spent several months in Iceland with the IceWind team last year notes, “We are so thrilled to bring the power, beauty, and reliability of IceWind’s turbines to the US, and know that this will be just the start of a new pillar of renewable energy in the US, home installed wind power.”

Older adults are less likely to have a will: The number of older and middle-aged adults with estate planning documents dropped by 20% and 25% since 2019, respectively.

Kim Hegwood knows the importance of establishing a legacy for you and your loved ones. Seeing her grandparents struggle with the ins-and-outs of Social Security, estate and protection planning, elder law and other bureaucracies associated with the aging process, Kim experienced first-hand the many financial and emotional challenges facing the elderly, infirm and their families. Inspired to help people with similar obstacles, Kim started Hegwood Law Group, a family firm where a family’s best interests remain at the forefront. A mother of three, Kim also found that by starting her own practice, she could be on-hand and play an active part in her children’s lives.

"You can’t have a win/win scenario in poker because of the way the game is designed. In economic and game theory we call this a zero-sum game."
- Sarah Nadav

That’s what we are looking at with the COVID-19 response. Countries are putting people on lockdown because the virus either spreads or it doesn’t. And if it spreads, everyone loses- not just the people who get sick. One person’s gain (freedom) is another person’s loss (safety).

We are no longer talking about health in the context of the elderly or immunocompromised. We’re talking about society as a whole, because the longer this drags on- the worse it is for economies and society at large.

"The near-nationwide lockdown intended to slow the spread of COVID-19 has created “a perfect macroeconomic storm” that’s put the U.S. on track for a depression worse even than the Great Depression — it is therefore “idiotic exuberance” to invest in the market now"
-Boston University economics professor Laurence Kotlikoff in an interview with ThinkAdvisor.

Kotlikoff, who in 2014 was named by The Economist one of the world’s 25 most influential economists, floats a plan for reopening the U.S. economy: Director of the Fiscal Analysis Center, Kotlikoff served on President Ronald Reagan’s Council of Economic Advisors and as a consultant to the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the U.S. Education Department and the U.S. Labor Department, among other organizations and governments.
