The Houston Midtown Chapter of The Society for Financial Awareness Presents MONEY MATTERS with Christopher Hensley

There's a reason Facebook was birthed in a dorm room, Amazon.com came from people not in the bookstore business, and UBER was created by people who weren't from the taxi industry.  Innovation, discovery, and creating disruption require blowing up conventional thinking and unleashing your entrepreneurial brilliance.

Mad Genius is a fire hose of creative stimulation that will spark breakthrough ideas and show you how to nurture them

One of the key challenges of managing your finances during retirement is determining how much you can spend without depleting your nest egg. What do you do if you retire and the market goes south shortly after?

Friday we were joined by Jeffrey Christakos, CPA/PFS, CFP, CLU, AIF. We discussed rightsizing your life for retirement and what to do in the event of a market downturn when you retire.

In this age or rapid disruption driven by technology and globalization, jobs and entire career tracks are created and destroyed in front of our eyes. Today's careers are episodic- they don't happen on a smooth path, but move through many phases. No job is perfect forever, and we have to be prepared to adapt and move on, perhaps multiple times, unlike our parents and grandparents who may have stayed in one company all their lives.

Friday we were joined by author, Farai Chideya. We discussed changing careers, growing in your current position and the retirement dilemma.

Farai Chideya has combined media, technology, and socio-political analysis during her twenty-five-year career as an award-winning author, journalist, professor, and lecturer. She is a Distinguished Writer in Residence at New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and a senior writer for the data, politics, and sports site FiveThirtyEight.com. She was also a spring 2012 fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics. She frequently appears on public radio and cable television, speaking about race, politics, and culture. She was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated magna cum laude with a BA from Harvard University in 1990.

Every year in December we witness families who overextend their budget just to keep up with the Jones's. Only in January when it is time to pay the credit card bill do we ask the question - How do we prevent this from happening next year?

Friday we were joined live in the studio by Author and Speaker Lonnie Mathews. We discussed how to cure the Christmas credit card hangover. We also kicked off Houston Money Week 2016 which is coming up in April of 2016.

College is a time of new found freedom for many students. But that can spell trouble if that freedom applies to personal finances too. Students need to understand basic money management skills such as living within a budget and handling credit and debt. A solid financial foundation can lead to a lifetime of financial success.

We were joined on the show by Patsy Collins. Patsy Collins is the Director of the Student Money Management Center at Sam Houston State University.  She is an Accredited Financial Counselor and is the Association for Financial Counseling Planning and Education’s - Counselor of the Year.  She is also a contributing author to Dr. Jay Liebowitz’ book Financial Literacy Education:  Addressing Student, Business, and Government Needs.  Patsy doesn’t believe that graduates from Sam Houston State University should live paycheck to paycheck.  With that goal in mind, the Student Money Management Center teaches the students at Sam Houston State University how to deliberately and intentionally aggregate wealth so they don’t just survive – they thrive!

Today, the most successful businesses and entrepreneurs thrive through connectivity, socialization, and sharing. It is an age of WE-Commerce, an economy centered on the power of “we” instead of “me,” focused on the needs of the many over the few. On-demand, sharing economy, gig economy, collaborative consumption - whatever the latest term, there’s a great economic shift happening, and consequently a need to transform and overhaul our business models in order to thrive and keep up with the times.

We were joined on the show by author and CEO Billee Howard. Billee Howard is based in New York and is founder and chief engagement officer of Brandthropologie, and president of Mojo Risin Studios. She also founded Eleven, a national women’s network with the mantra ‘United We Rise United We Stand, and The House of We dedicated to the new sharing economy. Howard has been guiding companies to produce, envision, innovate, and create passionate dialogues and has had the privilege of working with many great leaders and brands including Jeffrey Katzenberg, Dreamworks Animation, Faith Popcorn, PepsiCo, Samsung, FastCompany, Boeing, Warby Parker among others. Howard was the winner of PR Week’s 30 under 30, and 40 under 40, as well as being selected for the Media Professional of the Year Award twice.

Approximately 19% of the population is caring for an adult relative (sibling, grown child, parent, neighbor) who is dealing with long term medical issues such as cancer, stroke, Alzheimers, dementia, or catastrophic injuries. Caregiving impacts people emotionally, physically and economically. Last year Americans worked millions of hours without compensation, care that would have cost $470 BILLION (the value of Walmart's annual sales, and more than the US annual Medicare budget). The pressures of caring for relatives without compensation can also impair the ability of a caregiver to hold down a "day job". Then add on huge medical expenses that can drive families into poverty and bankruptcy.

More on Amy Goyer, Author, Speaker, Consultant As AARP's Family Expert, I provide expertise on a variety of family issues - from grandparenting to family caregiving, parenting and other family relationships, multigenerational living, family history and just about anything that pertains to families! Right now the most important role I'm playing in life is that of primary caregiver for my parents who are 85 and 88.
