Why women's relationships with other women at work are often fraught and when they are, have the potential to completely derail women's careers.

We were joined today by author and practicing attorney Andrea S. Kramer. Her new book, coauthored with Alton B. Harris, It's Not You, It's the Workplace: Women's Conflict at Work and the Bias that Built It delves into the reasons that the gender pay gap and unequal gender representation have persisted in the workplace. Importantly, it also describes the ways some organizations have been successful in removing gender bias from their systematized processes.

How do customers want your brand to navigate the political landscape? Christine Wise discusses the surprising research findings from Seattle agency DNA's deep dive into when and why corporate political advocacy works... and when it doesn't.

We were joined today by Christine Wise, the agency's Chief Strategy Officer to talk about Foresight 2020 - a national representative study on the attitudes and opinions of 2,000 Americans with regard to brands and political stances.

Foresight 2020 research shows that the overwhelming majority of consumers agree on the importance of many core values and see a number of these shared values as “under threat” today. When considering the unprecedented political divisiveness that is so pervasive today, it is no surprise people are hoping for brands to build common ground.

“As we look ahead to what is certain to be a highly-charged political climate in 2020, we saw an opportunity to use data and insights to help marketers and brands create winning strategies for  the year ahead,” explained Alan Brown, CEO and co-founder of DNA. “Just as political candidates are courting independent votes, brands can broaden their relevance to more people by championing common ground than by firmly planting a flag on the side of any single issue or candidate. Staying authentic and doubling down on important shared values may be the best way for brands to add value and bring people together in today’s landmine filled political landscape.”

For starters, our political system and political division is the number one issue facing the country when looking at the combination of what is both important and polarizing.

As people look ahead to 2020, most anticipate things will continue to get worse with only 8% of people disagreeing with the statement that “the election year will further divide and polarize our country.”

“Although there are specific groups of people that will immediately applaud and reward a brand for taking a strong political or societal stance,” explains Christine Wise, Chief Strategy Officer at DNA and leader of the study, “many have a degree of skepticism about  brand activism with 53% agreeing that ‘Too many brands use societal issues as a marketing ploy to sell their product/service.’”

Cultivating unity is the number one thing on a list of what people want from brands with 54% agreeing “Brands should help build common ground and avoid taking sides.”

According to the survey, DNA sees  an opportunity for brands to be the change people want to see by protecting and projecting shared values especially those that are viewed as most important and under threat today. These values include privacy, preserving the environment, safety, fairness, open-mindedness, independence, compassion, and honesty.

Noted Ms. Wise, “We see rich and fertile ground for brands to advocate around our shared values. DNA has analyzed a large range of values and can guide brands to those that are most important and also seen as most under threat in 2020 based on a wide range of factors. Generation cohorts, where people live, and political affiliation reveal both differences and highlight commonalities that provide a framework for how brands can succeed and drive relevance in 2020.”

Personal Issues Remain More Pressing than Political Issues
As concerning as the state of politics is for many, only 13% of Americans strongly agree that they’re “losing sleep about what is happening now and what lies ahead in 2020.”  This is in part because personal problems are more pressing and political fatigue has already set in.

Improving physical health and improving personal finances top the list of personal priorities  for 2020 across all generations. Younger generations (Gen Z and Millennials) differ from older generations with additional importance placed on advancing their job/career, improving their personal relationships, trying new things, maintaining a sense of balance, and improving their mental health.

In addition, DNA found that brands should consider how their employees feel - not just what their customers feel - about political advocacy. With a tight talent pool, keeping the entire enterprise in mind is vital for companies as 37% of Americans overall would be proud to be employed by a company that publicly advocated in support of causes or issues I care about.

Research methodology
The Foresight for 2020 project is a nationally representative quantitative study of 2,000 Americans, ages 18+. The quantitative survey was fielded in August 2019.  The study examines the current state of American sentiment, the values we hold most dear and those we feel are under threat today, how we perceive the issues of the day, and what we see as the role/responsibility of brands during this unique moment in time. The survey has a margin of error of 2% at a 95% confidence level.  In addition to the quantitative study, Foresight 2020 also includes:
·      Social data intelligence analysis of online conversations leveraging NetBase platform
·      Analysis of political polling and ongoing tracking of US consumer sentiment
·      Case study examples of the intersection of brands and issue-based politics
·      Qualitative interviews with academics and leaders in brand safety

Probability-based or safety-first? What trade-offs exist between these two dramatically different philosophies for retirement income planning? Wade Pfau discusses his new book - Safety-First Retirement Planning: An Integrated Approach for a Worry-Free Retirement.

We were joined today by bestselling author Wade D. Pfau, Ph.D., CFA, RICP.

Dr. Pfau is the director of the Retirement Income Certified Professional designation and a Professor of Retirement Income at The American College of Financial Services in King of Prussia, PA. As well, he is a Principal and Director for McLean Asset Management. He holds a doctorate in economics from Princeton University and publishes frequently in a wide variety of academic and practitioner research journals on topics related to retirement income. He hosts the Retirement Researcher website, and is a contributor to Forbes, Advisor Perspectives, Journal of Financial Planning, and an Expert Panelist for the Wall Street Journal. He is the author of the books, Safety-First Retirement Planning: An Integrated Approach for a Worry-Free Retirement, How Much Can I Spend in Retirement? A Guide to Investment-Based Retirement Income Strategies, and Reverse Mortgages: How to Use Reverse Mortgages to Secure Your Retirement.

About Safety-First Retirement Income Planning

To learn two fundamentally different philosophies for retirement income planning, which I call probability-based and safety-first, diverge on the critical issue of where a retirement plan is best served: in the risk/reward trade-offs of a diversified and aggressive investment portfolio that relies primarily on the stock market, or in the contractual protections of insurance products that integrate the power of risk pooling and actuarial science alongside investments. The probability-based approach is generally better understood by the public. It advocates using an aggressive investment portfolio with a large allocation to stocks to meet retirement goals. My earlier book How Much Can I Spend in Retirement? A Guide to Investment-Based Retirement Strategies provides an extensive investigation of probability-based approaches. But this investments-only attitude is not the optimal way to build a retirement income plan. There are pitfalls in retirement that we are less familiar with during the accumulation years. The nature of risk changes. Longevity risk is the possibility of living longer than planned, which could mean not having resources to maintain the retiree’s standard of living. And once retirement distributions begin, market downturns in the early years can disproportionately harm retirement sustainability. This is sequence-of-returns risk, and it acts to amplify the impacts of market volatility in retirement. Traditional wealth management is not equipped to handle these new risks in a fulfilling way. More assets are required to cover spending goals over a possibly costly retirement triggered by a long life and poor market returns. And yet, there is no assurance that assets will be sufficient. For retirees who are worried about outliving their wealth, probability-based strategies can become excessively conservative and stressful. This book focuses on the other option: safety-first retirement planning. Safety-first advocates support a more bifurcated approach to building retirement income plans that integrates insurance with investments, providing lifetime income protections to cover spending. With risk pooling through insurance, retirees effectively pay an insurance premium that will provide a benefit to support spending in otherwise costly retirements that could deplete an unprotected investment portfolio. Insurance companies can pool sequence and longevity risks across a large base of retirees, much like a traditional defined-benefit company pension plan or Social Security, allowing for retirement spending that is more closely aligned with averages. When bonds are replaced with insurance-based risk pooling assets, retirees can improve the odds of meeting their spending goals while also supporting more legacy at the end of life, especially in the event of a longer-than-average retirement. We walk through this thought process and logic in steps, investigating three basic ways to fund a retirement spending goal: with bonds, with a diversified investment portfolio, and with risk pooling through annuities and life insurance. We consider the potential role for different types of annuities including simple income annuities, variable annuities, and fixed index annuities. I explain how different annuities work and how readers can evaluate them. We also examine the potential for whole life insurance to contribute to a retirement income plan. When we properly consider the range of risks introduced after retirement, I conclude that the integrated strategies preferred by safety-first advocates support more efficient retirement outcomes. Safety-first retirement planning helps to meet financial goals with less worry. This book explains how to evaluate different insurance options and implement these solutions into an integrated retirement plan.

When preparing for standardized tests, most students only study content and strategy. But teacher and mindfulness expert Logan Thompson claims that those are just the tip of the iceberg.

Beyond the Content shows readers how to use mindfulness to identify and cope with hindering thoughts and emotions--what author Logan Thompson calls "passengers."

Thompson says that while mindfulness is already practiced in businesses, colleges, and professional sports to optimize performance, it's long overdue in test prep.

Logan Thompson scored in the 99th percentile on the SAT(R), GRE(R), and GMAT(R). He has studied and practiced mindfulness since 2008. After earning his MBA from Vanderbilt University, Thompson lived at the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, MA, for two and a half years, spending several months in silent mindfulness retreats. He also completed a two-year mindfulness teacher-training program by Inward Bound Mindfulness Education. Thompson holds a master's of education in human development and psychology from Harvard University and is an adjunct psychology professor. He has spend the past several years teaching both mindfulness and test prep for Manhattan Prep.

Have you ever heard of a world-class photographer dubbed "A Master of Light"?

Michael Grecco is one of the best-known celebrity photographers in the world. His beautiful, insightful work is all around us--on movie posters, in advertising, on magazine covers, everywhere. “I delight in inspiring people,” he writes. “I want them to stop, think, and feel.”

Does your company throw around new ideas until one sounds just good enough to execute and scale to everyone?

In Start at the End, technology executive and behavioral scientist Matt Wallaert argues that the purpose of everything is behavior change. By starting with outcomes instead of processes, the most effective companies understand what people want to do and why they aren't already doing it, then build products and services to bridge the gap.

Wallaert is a behavioral psychologist who has led product design at organizations ranging from startups like Clover Health to industry leaders such as Microsoft. Whether dissecting the success behind Uber's ridesharing service or Flamin' Hot Cheetos, he underscores with clarity and humor how this approach can improve the way we work and live.

Are you disillusioned with politics influencing corporations you purchase goods from?

Goods Unite Us is a company designed to empower consumers by putting a "Goods Score" on companies to show much they are influenced by political donations. Each company’s Goods Score is calculated on a scale of -100 to +100. The higher the score, the more likely that purchases from the company or brand will lead to meaningful campaign finance reform.

Goods Unite Us was started by Abigail Wuest, who is a government attorney and former local politician. Abigail grew up in a very politically active family, and she cares deeply about fair and transparent elections. She has a B.A. from St. Olaf College and a J.D. from Vermont Law School. Abigail’s career has spanned numerous levels of the government, including at the local, state and federal levels. She’s worked as a White House intern, as an intern at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in private law practice, and held elected office as a Dane County Board supervisor.

Are you a member of Gen X who does not feel that you will be prepared to retire at age 75? If so, you are not alone.

Megan Gorman is the founder of Chequers Financial Management, and believes that Gen Xers have unique challenges to face when it comes to retiring on time in a financially secure manner. If you are a Gen Xer, you won't want to miss Megan's invaluable tips on how to stay on top of saving for retirement.

Megan Gorman has been coloring outside the lines from an early age and continues to do so today. The Founding Partner of Chequers Financial Management, she’s a woman owner of a business in an industry that doesn’t typically see many women in the top leadership role. Add to that the fact that Chequers is a boutique high net worth tax and financial planning firm – firmly committed to ensuring that tax strategy serves as the cornerstone of the financial planning process (also unusual in the industry.) In many cases, Chequers clients have come to the firm because of its reputation for strategy and premier client service. Her expertise has seen her quoted in publications from the Wall Street Journal to The Washington Post to CNN Money.

The chief scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) turns a critical eye toward such practices as telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition and psychokinesis. Are such powers really possible? Science says yes.

According to noted scientist and bestselling author of The Conscious Universe, Dean Radin, magic is a natural aspect of reality, and each of us can tap into this power with diligent practice.

But wait, aren't things like ESP and telepathy just wishful thinking and flights of the imagination? Not according to the author, who worked on the US government's top secret psychic espionage program known as Stargate. Radin has spent the last forty years conducting controlled experiments that demonstrate that thoughts are things, that we can sense others' emotions and intentions from a distance, that intuition is more powerful than we thought, and that we can tap into the power of intention (think The Secret, only on a more realistic and scientific level). These dormant powers can help us to lead more interesting and fulfilling lives.

DEAN RADIN, Ph.D., is Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) and Distinguished Professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies. For nearly four decades he has been engaged in consciousness research. Before joining the research staff at IONS in 2001, he held appointments at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Princeton University, and several Silicon Valley think tanks, including SRI International, where he worked on a classified program investigating psychic phenomena for the U.S. government.

Many Americans set financial goals, but why is it so difficult to achieve them sometimes?

Billy J. Hensley, Ph.D., was appointed president and chief executive officer of the National Endowment for Financial Education® (NEFE®) in 2018. Before his time at NEFE, Hensley served as assistant director for the Ohio College Access Network, and program associate at KnowledgeWorks Foundation in Cincinnati; assistant director of admissions at Hiram College (OH); and as campaign coordinator at Union College (KY). He helped build the number of college access programs in Ohio by designing sustainability plans for communities all across the state.

NEFE is grounded in the belief that regardless of background or income level, financially informed individuals are better able to take control of their circumstances, improve their quality of life, and ensure a more stable future for themselves and their families, NEFE’s mission is to inspire educated financial decision making for individuals and families through every stage of life.

Women are more likely than men to feel that they lack investment knowledge. This can discourage them from taking even basic steps in ensuring their long-term financial security.

For this reason, many women face a real risk of being financially under-prepared for retirement. Being poor is not anyone’s idea of a good time. Sad statistic: women are 80% more likely to be in poverty at retirement compared to a man.

However, the good news is that with some guidance women are very well placed to grow their wealth and become financially empowered. In fact, studies indicate that there are actually some qualities that make women better investors. For example, women often trade less often than men because they have a longer term outlook. These qualities make women well-suited to become successful financially.

Why is it that some artists are wildly successful, while others just barely squeak by?

It may seem like an unfathomable mystery, how some are earning six figures while other, more talented artists, are struggling. Maria Brophy has dedicated 20 years of her life to researching the specific strategies that successful artists follow. After applying these strategies to her husband Drew Brophy's career, Maria grew his art sales to multiple six-figures yearly.

In ART MONEY SUCCESS, Maria tells personal stories of her own business deals, successes and failures, while sharing non-conventional wisdom that will help artists boost their sales.

Maria used to work in the insurance industry, but has since devoted her time to selling her husband's artwork. After thousands of hours of study, research and hands-on-experience, she became an expert on art licensing, deal making, and selling art.

It's often said that the chairman of the Fed is the second most powerful person in the world, next only to the president of the United States. Some say the chairman is even more powerful.

When Ben Bernanke publicly stated on September 8, 2013, the Fed's intent to continue its policy of quantitative easing, global markets instantly reversed direction from a worrying downward spiral to an exuberant upward surge. Even POTUS can't do that. Dr. Robert R. Johnson's Invest with the Fed takes the simple position that correct interpretation of Federal Reserve policy actions leads to better investing decisions. To this end, they present strategies that will help you design a portfolio that takes Fed policy into account.

Dr. Johnson is the author of multiple books and scholarly articles on portfolio management, asset valuation, wealth management, and monetary policy. He currently serves as Professor of Finance in Creighton University's Heider College of Business and on the board of RS Investment Management. From 1996 to 2011 he held a number of senior executive positions at CFA Institute and has extensive experience with credentialing programs, ethical and professional codes of conduct, and global business expansion. He is co-author of the books Strategic Value Investing, The Tools and Techniques of Investment Planning, and Investment Banking for Dummies. He is also coauthor of the forthcoming book Investing by Fed, which is scheduled to be published in December of 2014.
