Are you going through financial hardship in life? If so, you could be prey to predatory payday loan lenders in the state of Texas.

Even though lawmakers continue to look for ways to regulate payday loan lenders, a legal loophole allows lenders to charge unreasonable rates in the state of Texas. To combat this issue, Zara Mohidin works with Fig Loans to offer products that charge lower rates for people that are struggling financially.

Zara Mohidin is the head of strategy and business development at Fig Loans, where she works with everyday people to help lift them out of debt through efficient payday loans. She also has worked in investment management with the global law firm Linklaters, LLP. She is a graduate of NYU, and has worked with the United Nations.

House of Trump, House of Putin offers the first comprehensive investigation into the decades-long relationship among Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and the Russian Mafia that ultimately helped win Trump the White House.

Our guest today was Craig Unger. Craig Unger is the New York Times bestselling author of House of Trump, House of Putin; House of Bush, House of Saud, and other books. The former editor in chief of Boston Magazine, he has written for New York Magazine, The New Yorker, Esquire, among many other publications, and has been a longtime contributing editor of Vanity Fair magazine. A graduate of Harvard University, he has appeared as an analyst on dozens of broadcast outlets. He lives in New York City.

It is a chilling story that begins in the 1970s, when Trump made his first splash in the booming, money-drenched world of New York real estate, and ends with Trump's inauguration as president of the United States. That moment was the culmination of Vladimir Putin's long mission to undermine Western democracy, a mission that he and his hand-selected group of oligarchs and Mafia kingpins had ensnared Trump in, starting more than 20 years ago with the massive bailout of a string of sensational Trump hotel and casino failures in Atlantic City. This book confirms the most incredible American paranoias about Russian malevolence.

How much do you pay in Flood Insurance?

The average homeowner can pay over $100 a month. Which of course is $1200 a year. On a thirty-year loan, that equates to $36,000. That's a lot of money!

Wouldn't it be great if you could get your Flood Insurance rate reduced?

Better yet, what if you didn't have to pay for ANY Flood Insurance?

In his book, Flood Money, author Brad Hubbard shares how he has saved residential clients hundreds of thousands of dollars by legally getting them out of a flood zone. He has saved his commercial clients an excess of a million dollars! Now, he is showing the world exactly how he does it.

This book is a step-by-step guide to fighting FEMA and other federal and state organizations by equipping you with the tools and knowledge needed to find out your true Flood Zone.

The banks have told us that we need to pay flood insurance. The problem is that for many people, that decision was made decades ago using rudimentary tools and practices. Brad brings his Engineering background into play and, using modern methods and good old-fashioned common sense, can show you how to find out if you're paying tens of thousands of dollars that you don't have to.

After reading this book and following these steps, a good question for you might be, "What are you going to spend your money on now that you don't have to pay for Flood Insurance?"

Don’t plan to die? Bad news – humans have a 100% mortality rate. Yet only 30% of us make end-of-life plans: wills or trusts, advance medical directives and pre-need funeral planning. That leaves 70% of us unprepared and devastated, not if but when a death occurs.

Listen to Gail Rubin on why we avoid the topic of death and what we can do to improve end-of-life planning rates so everyone can have a good goodbye. Gail Rubin is a pioneering Certified Thanatologist – a death educator who uses humor and funny films to help teach about serious subjects. She was one of the first people to hold a Death Café in the United States. Known as The Doyenne of Death, she’s the author of A GOOD GOODBYE: Funeral Planning for Those Who Don’t Plan to Die.

What if the real secret to greater productivity, happiness and success is a habit that is thousands of years old?

Productivity has become an international obsession. We celebrate a work culture where people boast of long working hours, their extreme schedules and how little they sleep. A constant stream of emails, texts, tweets and more keeps us connected every minute and we rarely put our phones down. Every moment needs to be maximized and no time can be wasted.
And yet most of us also feel something is wrong. All of these attempts at optimizing business and life aren’t really making us happier. Ironically, it might not be making us all that productive either. In this groundbreaking book, noted entrepreneur and money manager Aaron Edelheit breaks down the myths around productivity and offers a startlingly simple solution: the Sabbath.

Aaron M. Edelheit is the Chief Strategy Officer of FLO Technologies. Since selling his company, The American Home in 2015, Aaron founded Mindset Capital, a private investment firm. Aaron has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, CNBC, Bloomberg, and the New York Times and has given lectures on entrepreneurship and investments all over the U.S., Canada and South Africa. Aaron serves on the board of the Moishe House Foundation and is a Partner of Social Venture Partners in Santa Barbara working on homelessness.

The chief scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) turns a critical eye toward such practices as telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition and psychokinesis. Are such powers really possible? Science says yes.

According to noted scientist and bestselling author of The Conscious Universe, Dean Radin, magic is a natural aspect of reality, and each of us can tap into this power with diligent practice.

But wait, aren't things like ESP and telepathy just wishful thinking and flights of the imagination? Not according to the author, who worked on the US government's top secret psychic espionage program known as Stargate. Radin has spent the last forty years conducting controlled experiments that demonstrate that thoughts are things, that we can sense others' emotions and intentions from a distance, that intuition is more powerful than we thought, and that we can tap into the power of intention (think The Secret, only on a more realistic and scientific level). These dormant powers can help us to lead more interesting and fulfilling lives.

Dean Radin, PhD, is Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences and Associated Distinguished Professor of Integral and Transpersonal Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies. He earned an MS in electrical engineering and a PhD in psychology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Before joining the research staff at IONS in 2001, he held appointments at AT&T Bell Labs, Princeton University, University of Edinburgh, and SRI International. He is author or coauthor of hundreds of technical and popular articles, four dozen book chapters, and four popular books: The Conscious Universe (1997), Entangled Minds (2006), Supernormal(2013), and Real Magic (2018).

The first insider account straight from Trump University, by one of its principal instructors.

While the President of the United States seems to be able to shock with each new tweet, and no depth seems too low for him to sink to, we've yet to hear from someone who was at the heart of one of his signature outrages--Trump University, the infamous and elaborate scheme to con hundreds of earnest citizens out of their hard-earned dollars.

Until now.

Stephen Gilpin is a real estate guy. His forte is buying distressed properties and flipping them; he's done a lot of that, in his day, in Florida and elsewhere. In the go-go world of the 1990s, he came to New York City from Pittston, PA., with nothing other than his looks, and after a brief and successful stint as a male model, managed to work his way into the thick of the brutal world of New York real estate. This was where the real money was, he correctly reasoned--where he'd meet men and women possessed of character, energy―and lots of cash.

But this is not a "Wolf of Wall Street" story. Gilpin quickly became an expert in leveraging properties, and he saw this as a way to rescue declining neighborhoods―and and get rich in the process. He wanted to share his knowledge with others, and when he was asked to join Trump University's Trump Entrepreneur Initiative as a "Master Real Estate Coach," to teach in the shadow of a man whom he then greatly admired, he jumped at the chance. Little did he know that he would become an unwilling participant in one of the largest con games in American history.

Who doesn’t want to know how to be their best when it matters most? To be more creative, more contented, more consumed? To soar and not to sink? As the deeds of these athletes prove, if we can master flow, there are no limits to what we can accomplish.

In this groundbreaking book, New York Times–bestselling author Steven Kotler decodes the mystery of ultimate human performance. Drawing on over a decade of research and first-hand reporting with dozens of top action and adventure sports athletes like big wave legend Laird Hamilton, big mountain snowboarder Jeremy Jones, and skateboarding pioneer Danny Way, Kotler explores the frontier science of “flow,” an optimal state of consciousness in which we perform and feel our best.

Steven’s work have been translated into over 40 languages and appeared in over 100 publications, including The New York Times, Atlantic Monthly, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Wired and TIME. He also appears frequently on television and radio, and lectures widely on human performance, disruptive technology and radical innovation. He is also the cofounder of Creating Equilibrium, a conference/concert/innovation accelerator focused on solving critical environmental challenges, and, alongside his wife, author Joy Nicholson, Steven is the cofounder of Rancho de Chihuahua, a hospice care/special needs care dog sanctuary in the mountains of Northern New Mexico.

Our ego, and its accompanying sense of nagging self-doubt as we work to be bigger, better, smarter, and more in control, is one affliction we all share. And while our ego claims to have our best interests at heart, in its never-ending pursuit of attention and power, it sabotages the very goals it sets to achieve.

In Advice Not Given, renowned psychiatrist and author Dr. Mark Epstein reveals how Buddhism and Western psychotherapy, two traditions that developed in entirely different times and places and, until recently, had nothing to do with each other, both identify the ego as the limiting factor in our well-being, and both come to the same conclusion: When we give the ego free reign, we suffer; but when it learns to let go, we are free.

Mark Epstein, M.D. is a psychiatrist in private practice in New York City and the author of a number of books about the interface of Buddhism and psychotherapy, including Thoughts without a Thinker, Going to Pieces without Falling Apart, Going on Being, Open to Desire and Psychotherapy without the Self. His newest work, The Trauma of Everyday Life, will be published in August of 2013 by Penguin Press. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Harvard University and is currently Clinical Assistant Professor in the Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis at New York University.

“Once you have satisfied your basic sustenance needs—food, water, health, and a roof over your head—poverty has more to do with your head than your wallet.” - John Hope Bryant

In John Hope Bryant's insightful new book The Memo: Five Rules for Your Economic Liberation, he makes bold claim: he supermajority of people who live in poverty, whom Bryant calls the invisible class, as well as millions in the struggling middle class, haven’t gotten “the memo”—until now. Bryant gives readers tools for empowerment by covering everything from achieving basic financial literacy to investing in positive relationships and approaching wealth with a completely new attitude.

Bryant is the founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Operation HOPE, Inc. the largest not- for-profit and best-in-class provider of financial literacy, financial inclusion and economic empowerment tools and services in the United States for youth and adults; chairman and chief executive officer of Bryant Group Ventures and The Promise Homes Company, the largest for-profit minority-controlled owners of institutional-quality, single-family residential rental homes in the U.S., and co-founder of Global Dignity.

With money being one of the most constrained resources for individuals in today's world, budgeting can be a simple, yet powerful tool to save money fast.

Mitchell Walker is the creator and author of the PouchPlan Budget system. After spending 15 years as a CFO of a Berkshire Hathaway company, 11 years as a partner in a public tax practice, owning multiple businesses, serving as CFO of a college and as County Commissioner and City Councilman, Mitchell reveals why the personal side of money is often the most neglected but most important thing to get right. Mitchell was deep in debt and his finances were a mess when the love of his life came on the scene. They started a blended family with 5 children ages 5 to 17 and a lot more love than money. He had to figure out new ways to make money work for him and fast. How he discovered a new approach to personal budgeting will inform and entertain your audience. Mitchell likes to say that they went from “Ouch to Pouch.” He enjoys sharing how getting money right makes life easier, much easier; getting it wrong just makes life harder.

How much can you spend in retirement? Naturally, this is an essential question for those approaching this important life transition. Essentially, if you wish to retire one day, you are increasingly responsible for figuring out how to save during your working years and convert your savings into sustainable income for an ever-lengthening number of retirement years. The nature of risk also changes in retirement, as the lifestyle of retirees become more vulnerable to the impacts of market volatility, unknown longevity, and spending shocks. Retirees have one opportunity to build a successful plan. It is not an easy task, but it is manageable.

On today’s show we talked with Author Dr. Wade Pfau about his new book How to Spend Money Wisely in Retirement.

Dr. Wade D. Pfau, CFA®, is a Professor of Retirement Income in the PhD in Financial and Retirement Planning program at The American College of Financial Services. He is also a contributor to the The College’s Retirement Income Certified Professional® (RICP®) designation program curriculum.

Dr. Pfau is a co-editor of the Journal of Personal Finance. He has spoken at the national conferences of organizations for financial professionals such as the CFA Institute, FPA, NAPFA, AICPA-PFP, and AFS. He also publishes frequently in a wide variety of academic and practitioner research journals. He hosts the Retirement Researcher blog, and is a monthly columnist for Advisor Perspectives, a RetireMentor for MarketWatch, a contributor to Forbes, and an Expert Panelist for The Wall Street Journal. His research has been discussed in outlets that include print editions of The EconomistThe New York TimesThe Wall Street Journal, and Money Magazine.

Money has the power to destroy, but it can also be an incredibly effective tool for social change. Impact investing – the support of social and environmental projects with a financial return – has become a hot topic on the global stage; poised to eclipse traditional aid by ten times in the next decade. And it has the potential to completely restructure the global economy, making social and environmental responsibility integral to how we move money through society, rather than an afterthought.

In her book REAL IMPACT: The New Economics of Social Change, Morgan Simon argues that impact investing will do a lot of good – if we can get it right. An impact investor with 17 years of experience who has influenced over $150 billion from endowments, families, and foundations – who also manages funds for members of the seventh wealthiest family in America – Simon sees warning signs that impact investment is at a crucial turning point. As investors focus on growth and acceptance, it’s actually in danger of replicating the same mistakes of traditional charity and finance that impact investment was designed to correct. And without the right guiding principles, it has the potential to do more harm than good

On today’s show we talked with Author Morgan Simon about her book Real Impact - The New Economics of Social Change.

Morgan Simon is a widely recognized leader in impact investment who builds bridges between finance and social justice. Over the past seventeen years, she has influenced over $150 billion from high-net-worth individuals, foundations, and endowments. She supports Pi Investments and the Libra Foundation, and is also co- founder and chair of the nonprofit Transform Finance.

It’s not a revelation to learn that any comedian offstage is a shy weirdo.  What’s utterly revealing and totally fantastic about this film is seeing Gilbert Gottfried's marriage, which is a model of affection and good sense in the face of eccentricity.  Every couple should see this. Every marriage should be more like his.  This is the rare film where a look at a performer’s private life is not what you expect at all, and also weirdly inspiring.  I loved this. Ira Glass

Legendary comedian Gilbert Gottfried has had quite the career. Rocketing to fame in the 1980s, he was thrust into the public consciousness almost immediately thanks to his brash personality, unique worldview, and off-kilter comic timing. Now, foul-mouthed and unapologetic after decades of flying solo in both his work and in his personal life, Gilbert has shockingly reinvented himself…as a family man.

Director Neil Berkeley’s Gilbert reveals an unexpected side to the iconic comedian. The film peeks behind the larger-than-life persona at a more personal story about growing up in Brooklyn and becoming a husband and father late in life. Gottfried’s singular outlook on life and his ability to bring humor to even the darkest situations has, at times, gotten him into trouble. Still he soldiers on, an expert craftsman at bringing his audience to the edge (and sometimes pushing them over). Gilbert strips the comedic character away to reveal the man behind it. Berkeley allows the audience an intimate — even vulnerable — view of Gottfried out of character.

On today’s show we talked with Director Neil Berkeley about his upcoming documentary Gilbert which will be showing on November 8th in Houston at The Alamo Drafthouse.

Neil Berkeley, Producer/ Director/ Writer

Neil Berkeley is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker and entrepreneur. His first feature film, Beauty Is Embarrassing, premiered at SXSW in 2012 and chronicles the life and times of the inspiring artist Wayne White. The film won several Best Documentary awards and was featured in PBS’ Independent Lens in January of 2013. His second feature, Harmontown, premiered at SXSW in 2014 and follows self-destructive TV writer Dan Harmon on an emotional, cross-country journey of self-discovery.  He is currently in production on his fourth feature documentary, currently titled Death Is a Door. The film is the story of how American rock music became a lifestyle for many young Cubans in the late ’80s. The decisions they made led to rampant police abuse combined with oppression from the government and eventually drove several hundred of them to self-inject with HIV.

Berkeley is also a successful commercial and promo director and has worked with brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac and Kraft Foods. He is the owner of BRKLY, a design based production company focused on developing marketing campaigns for network and cable television. The company has helped launch some of TV’s most popular shows, including Brother vs. Brother, Scandal, Project Runway, Top Chef and many more.

Have you already filed with FEMA but been denied? Is the estimate that your insurance company gave you much lower than what you expected. What roadblocks should you be aware of when it comes to filing a FEMA or flood insurance claim?

On today’s show we talked with former catastrophe adjuster, Kevin Godfrey about how to deal with FEMA and/or your insurance company.

The brutal storm that pummeled the Houston and Gulf Coast area is likely to rank as one of the nation's costliest natural disasters, with tens of billions in lost economic activity and property damage across a region crucial to the energy, chemical and shipping industries.

On today's show we talked about the Macro and Micro economic impact of Hurricane Harvey. We looked at expected cost at a national level. We also examined the possibility of FEMA buying out homes flooded by Harvey.

Houston Money Week has compiled a list of resources available through our partner organizations for disaster recovery after Harvey. We discussed some of the initial rejections on FEMA claims and how to get help if you are undocumented.

For many marketing professionals, "science" is a four-letter word. They see brand-building as an unteachable art guided by their intuition and experience. But at its core, marketing aims to seed ideas into people's minds, make them feel a certain way, and, ultimately, get them to act.

Our guest today was Daryl Weber, author of Brand Seduction: How Neuroscience Can Help Marketers Build Memorable Brands. We discussed the role of brand in the presidential election, and much more. In Brand Seduction, Daryl reveals the latest psychological and neuroscientific discoveries about how our minds process brand information and make decisions, and the important roles our emotions and unconscious play in our selections.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates food waste in the United States to be about 30 to 40 percent of the food supply. An estimated 133 billion pounds of food from stores, restaurants and homes was wasted in 2010, according to the USDA. The amount of uneaten food from homes and restaurants in 2008 was valued at $390 per customer.

Our guest for today was Barbara Heitman Bronstein, founder of Second Servings Houston. Raised in New York, Barbara has called Houston home for over 30 years. She graduated from Tufts University before earning an MBA in Marketing from New York University. After a successful career marketing some of America's leading brands for Unilever, Mars, and Coca-Cola, Barbara piloted a banquet food rescue program known as "Banquet Bounty for the Hungry", the precursor to Second Servings of Houston.

Second Servings of Houston strives to alleviate hunger and reduce waste by rescuing excess prepared food from hotels, caterers, sports venues, cafeterias, food retailers, and other regulated food businesses, and delivering it promptly and safely to approved charitable meal sites.

Drawing from examples gathered over two decades of turning a weekly Fort Worth comedy show into a full-time business that has them traveling the world and serving as Entrepreneurs in Residence at the business school at Texas Christian University, co-authors David Wilk, David Ahearn, and Frank Ford demonstrate how “yes, and” thinking helps improve communication skills, facilitate creative problem solving, and generate new ideas that can refresh and rejuvenate.  From understanding the value of open minded, active listening (the ability to say “yes” to anything and mean it); to a willingness to offer out-of-the-box ideas without prejudgment (putting the “and” into action); to demonstrating authentic respect for the ideas and intentions of others, Happy Accidents shows how the same elements that make for great teamwork on stage prove to be immensely successful strategies in the workplace and board room.

Frank Ford has had a successful career in the entertainment industry for the last 25 years and is one of the founding members and owner of Four Day Weekend, a comedy institution in Texas. He has also studied at the renowned Second City Conservatory in Chicago and taught advanced classes at the Four Day Weekend Training Center.

As a professional actor, Frank has appeared in numerous commercial spots, television shows and films. In addition, he has received critical-acclaim for his original comedy revues, comedy album, short films and acting roles.

Over the years, Frank has been recognized for his writing, including the sale of an original comedy to 20th Century FOX. Frank has recently finished writing a feature film, is working on a pilot treatment for HBO and is in the process of publishing his first book entitled, Happy Accidents, which teaches people how use the philosophy of improvisation in a positive way to enrich their lives.

Whether you're wondering if you are in the right career, looking to change job roles, or trying to reduce conflict and improve relationships at work and at home, you must begin by fully understanding your own interests and needs, and how they drive your ultimate happiness as well as unleash your stress points. Used by millions of people worldwide, The Birkman Method is the only personality-assessment tool that reaches beyond self-described behavior and situational analysis to unravel the DNA underpinning workplace satisfaction and productivity.

Sharon Birkman Fink has served as Birkman International, Inc.'s President and CEO since 2002. Originally trained as a singer/musician, Sharon was a National Merit Scholar and Woodrow Wilson Fellow who completed a Master's degree in Music at the University of Texas. It is widely acknowledged that there is both an ‘art’ and a ‘science’ to financial planning. Technical knowledge – the “science” – is crucial to delivering the technically accurate advice to clients. But the best advice in the world is meaningless if the financial advisor can’t master the “art” of delivering it in a skillful manner – leading a client to actually take action and improve their financial well-being. Yet despite its label as “art”, the reality is that how best to deliver financial advice advice can itself be subjected to scientific scrutiny. Which is beginning to happen, with the emergence of several “financial counseling laboratories” in educational institutions across the country.

Today's retirement looks nothing like your parents' experience. Our longer life expectancy and increasing intellectual capital have transformed our notion of the golden years. Often we're just not ready for a life without work. We fear outliving our money and our meaning. We want to stay productive (whatever that means to us personally) well into the future and for baby boomers and the following generations, that future is closer than we think. No matter your definition of financial confidence, with the right tools and approach, you can create the retirement of your dreams: your memorable encore. The Encore Curve examines two crucial questions: Now what am I going to do? and will I have enough money?

Andy Raub has helped countless individuals plan for their retirement and manage their investments. As an early Baby Boomer, he understands the fears most retirees now face, which prompted him to write a book to help them reset their life goals and reorganize their money so they can live with renewed purpose.

"The road to the future leads us smack into the wall. We simply ricochet off the alternatives that destiny offers: a demographic explosion that triggers social chaos and spreads death, nuclear delirium, and the quasi-annihilation of the species. Our survival is no more than a question of 25, 50, or perhaps 100 years." Jacques Cousteau

If you really want to understand President Donald Trump's finances, the first two pages of his federal income tax return isn't the best place to look. Fraud can happen anywhere—even in the most successful companies. Most businesses, large and small, lose an average of 5% of their annual gross revenues to insider fraud.

The worst part? The Thief in Your Company is most likely the person you trust the most.

Forensic accountant Tiffany Couch is a sleuth with an adding machine. She has seen theft in many forms, but what sticks with her the most is not the fraud schemes or the dollar losses. It’s the victims who all experience the same emotional devastation that these crimes leave in their wake.

Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever; obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup. He explains what research has shown about our addiction to sweets. He clarifies the arguments against sugar, corrects misconceptions about the relationship between sugar and weight loss; and provides the perspective necessary to make informed decisions about sugar as individuals and as a society.

GARY TAUBES is cofounder of the Nutrition Science Initiative (NuSI). He's an award-winning science and health journalist, the author of Why We Get Fat and Good Calories, Bad Calories, and a former staff writer for Discover and correspondent for the journal Science. His writing has also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, and Esquire, and has been included in numerous Best of anthologies, including The Best of the Best American Science Writing (2010). He has received three Science in Society Journalism Awards from the National Association of Science Writers. He is also the recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Award in Health Policy Research. He lives in Oakland, California.

After five years living in a studio that was 90 square feet (12' x 7.5' - roughly the perimeter of a Honda Accord), people sent me messages from all over the world, amazed at how I was able to fit my entire life in a tiny space. Some asked for advice, others thought I was nuts, saying that for the same price I could live in a larger space elsewhere. What most folks didn't realize was that I may have been living in a tiny space, but I was living large. 90 Lessons for Living Large in 90 Square Feet (...or more), part memoir/part "want to" guide, gives 90 lessons that I learned about organizing, downsizing and "living large" as a result of living in that tiny space. Hope they help you too.

In January 2015, life changed dramatically for us... we decided it was time to give up on our ordinary life, follow our dreams and travel the world. Why wait until we retire?  Why wait until the kids have left home?  We decided to do it now, WITH our kids.

So this is our story... our journey as we've created a new life for ourselves. Some may say we are crazy, some simply don't understand, but the decision to give up our location dependent life to become digital nomads has ignited something within us.  We are excited.

Today we were joined by travel blogger, Karen King. We discussed traveling on a budget, traveling with kids and even how to find free room and board while traveling.

We spoke with New York Times bestselling author Philip Moeller on his newest book Get Whats Yours for Medicare. We also discussed the current election and what a Trump or Clinton presidency means to the Social Security and Medicare system.

A coauthor of the New York Times bestselling guide to Social Security Get What’s Yours authors an essential companion to explain Medicare, the nation’s other major benefit for older Americans. Learn how to maximize your health coverage and save money.

Social Security provides the bulk of most retirees’ income and Medicare guarantees them affordable health insurance. But few people know what Medicare covers and what it doesn’t, what it costs, and when to sign up. Nor do they understand which parts of Medicare are provided by the government and how these work with private insurance plans—Medicare Advantage, drug insurance, and Medicare supplement insurance.

Do you understand Medicare’s parts A, B, C, D? Which Part D drug plan is right and how do you decide? Which is better, Medigap or Medicare Advantage? What do you do if Medicare denies payment for a procedure that your doctor says you need? How do you navigate the appeals process for denied claims? If you’re still working or have a retiree health plan, how do those benefits work with Medicare? Do you know about the annual enrollment period for Medicare, or about lifetime penalties for late enrollment, or any number of other key Medicare rules?

Health costs are the biggest unknown expense for older Americans, who are turning sixty-five at the rate of 10,000 a day. Understanding and navigating Medicare is the best way to save health care dollars and use them wisely. In Get What’s Yours for Medicare, retirement expert Philip Moeller explains how to understand all these important choices and make the right decisions for your health and wealth now—and for the future.

These are just a few of the questions that author Kayt Sukel tackles, applying the latest research in neuroscience and psychology to compelling real-world situations. Building on a portfolio of work that has appeared in such publications as Scientific American, Atlantic Monthly, The Washington Post, and more, Sukel offers an in-depth look at risk-taking and its role in the many facets of life that resonates on a personal level. Nearly half of all working Americans could risk losing their jobs because of technology. It’s not only blue-collar jobs at stake. Millions of educated knowledge workers—writers, paralegals, assistants, medical technicians—are threatened by accelerating advances in artificial intelligence.

The industrial revolution shifted workers from farms to factories. In the first era of automation, machines relieved humans of manually exhausting work. Today, Era Two of automation continues to wash across the entire services-based economy that has replaced jobs in agriculture and manufacturing. Era Three, and the rise of AI, is dawning. Smart computers are demonstrating they are capable of making better decisions than humans. Brilliant technologies can now decide, learn, predict, and even comprehend much faster and more accurately than the human brain, and their progress is accelerating. Where will this leave lawyers, nurses, teachers, and editors?

In Only Humans Need Apply, Thomas Hayes Davenport and Julia Kirby reframe the conversation about automation, arguing that the future of increased productivity and business success isn’t either human or machine. It’s both. The key is augmentation, utilizing technology to help humans work better, smarter, and faster. Instead of viewing these machines as competitive interlopers, we can see them as partners and collaborators in creative problem solving as we move into the next era. The choice is ours.

Most parents will do just about anything to secure happy lives and bright futures for their kids. Add in competition with other parents and near-constant pressure, their drive to give their kids the best of everything can backfire, setting back the child and the household finances.

Brett Graff, "The Home Economist," exposes how overspending can harm children by setting back intellect and encouraging narcissism, depression and unhealthy or unsafe habits. By unearthing research on pricey baby gear, oversized houses, so-called "educational" toys and after-school lessons, expensive sports equipment and private coaching, even certain organic products and unregulated "natural" medicines - she even has eye-opening findings on private schools versus public schools - Graff proves that we can spend too much getting our kids ahead and wind up instead setting them back.

Not Buying It proves that sound, rational decision-making about spending is far more beneficial for our kids than purchases made out of fear, pressure and confusion. With Graff's guidance, you'll confidently create the financial strategy that's best for your family, not the one pushed by marketers or practiced by your neighbors. Not Buying It is your blueprint for emotional and financial freedom, and the stability your children deserve.

In 2016 we have seen many musicians pass away. Almost daily we are surprised with headlines of celebrity deaths. The story we often fail to hear is the mess that's left behind for survivors if estate issues are not taken care of before hand. For those who haven't yet done any estate planning -- finalizing legal documents to manage and pass on property and set out wishes for end-of-life matters -- it's likely on their list of things to do.

We were joined by Estate Planning attorney Robert "Eli" Kiefaber .

Robert “Eli” Kiefaber is dedicated to providing comprehensive and highly personalized counsel in estate planning, wealth preservation strategies, beneficiary and inheritance protection and business planning. As co-founder of Kiefaber & Oliva LLP, he holds the firm’s value of exceptional client services and lawyer accessibility. Eli has a holistic approach to estate planning and designing wealth preservation strategies. He focuses on listening closely to the concerns, goals, dreams and values of his clients. He works closely with his clients throughout the estate planning process to develop strategies that achieve the goals and values of his clients. As a husband and father, Eli recognizes that estate planning is more than avoiding probate or estate taxes, but providing and caring for families and loved ones.

The idea of knowing your neighbor should not be a radical concept. Yet many of us sometime wave but seldom know who our neighbors really are. The idea of Co-Housing is based on intentional community.

Many of us do not want to leave our longtime home, but all that extra space is costly! Share your home, and you can afford to stay put!

We were joined by CEO of SeniorHomeshares.com, Stephanie Heacox .  We discussed spring cleaning your finances and much more!

In this age or rapid disruption driven by technology and globalization, jobs and entire career tracks are created and destroyed in front of our eyes. Today's careers are episodic- they don't happen on a smooth path, but move through many phases. No job is perfect forever, and we have to be prepared to adapt and move on, perhaps multiple times, unlike our parents and grandparents who may have stayed in one company all their lives.

Friday we were joined by author, Farai Chideya. We discussed changing careers, growing in your current position and the retirement dilemma.

Farai Chideya has combined media, technology, and socio-political analysis during her twenty-five-year career as an award-winning author, journalist, professor, and lecturer. She is a Distinguished Writer in Residence at New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and a senior writer for the data, politics, and sports site FiveThirtyEight.com. She was also a spring 2012 fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics. She frequently appears on public radio and cable television, speaking about race, politics, and culture. College is a time of new found freedom for many students. But that can spell trouble if that freedom applies to personal finances too. Students need to understand basic money management skills such as living within a budget and handling credit and debt. A solid financial foundation can lead to a lifetime of financial success.

We were joined on the show by Patsy Collins. Patsy Collins is the Director of the Student Money Management Center at Sam Houston State University.  She is an Accredited Financial Counselor and is the Association for Financial Counseling Planning and Education’s - Counselor of the Year.  She is also a contributing author to Dr. Jay Liebowitz’ book Financial Literacy Education:  Addressing Student, Business, and Government Needs.  Patsy doesn’t believe that graduates from Sam Houston State University should live paycheck to paycheck.  With that goal in mind, the Student Money Management Center teaches the students at Sam Houston State University how to deliberately and intentionally aggregate wealth so they don’t just survive – they thrive!

Today, the most successful businesses and entrepreneurs thrive through connectivity, socialization, and sharing. It is an age of WE-Commerce, an economy centered on the power of “we” instead of “me,” focused on the needs of the many over the few. On-demand, sharing economy, gig economy, collaborative consumption - whatever the latest term, there’s a great economic shift happening, and consequently a need to transform and overhaul our business models in order to thrive and keep up with the times.

We were joined on the show by author and CEO Billee Howard. Billee Howard is based in New York and is founder and chief engagement officer of Brandthropologie, and president of Mojo Risin Studios. She also founded Eleven, a national women’s network with the mantra ‘United We Rise United We Stand, and The House of We dedicated to the new sharing economy. Howard has been guiding companies to produce, envision, innovate, and create passionate dialogues and has had the privilege of working with many great leaders and brands including Jeffrey Katzenberg, Dreamworks Animation, Faith Popcorn, PepsiCo, Samsung, FastCompany, Boeing, Warby Parker among others. Approximately 19% of the population is caring for an adult relative (sibling, grown child, parent, neighbor) who is dealing with long term medical issues such as cancer, stroke, Alzheimers, dementia, or catastrophic injuries. Caregiving impacts people emotionally, physically and economically. Last year Americans worked millions of hours without compensation, care that would have cost $470 BILLION (the value of Walmart's annual sales, and more than the US annual Medicare budget). The pressures of caring for relatives without compensation can also impair the ability of a caregiver to hold down a "day job". Then add on huge medical expenses that can drive families into poverty and bankruptcy.

More on Amy Goyer, Author, Speaker, Consultant As AARP's Family Expert, I provide expertise on a variety of family issues - from grandparenting to family caregiving, parenting and other family relationships, multigenerational living, family history and just about anything that pertains to families! Right now the most important role I'm playing in life is that of primary caregiver for my parents who are 85 and 88.

It's often said that the chairman of the Fed is the second most powerful person in the world, next only to the president of the United States. Some say the chairman is even more powerful. When Ben Bernanke publicly stated on September 8, 2013, the Fed's intent to continue its policy of quantitative easing, global markets instantly reversed direction from a worrying downward spiral to an exuberant upward surge. Even POTUS can't do that.

Today we were joined by the president of the American College and author, Dr. Robert R. Johnson. We discussed interest rates and his new book Invest with the Fed.

While everyone's heard stories of people cleaning out an attic to find
comic books they sold at a hefty profit, it's not just the older books that
are valuable. Even comic books from the last 20 years are becoming more
collectible. Some have jumped from just a few dollars each five years ago to $50 to $100 today. Smart collectors are finding that they can make money off of this trend, but only if they treat it like they would any serious
investment.

Today we were joined by the co-owner of Metropolis Collectibles, Vincent Zurzolo.

Vincent Zurzolo is co-owner of the New York-based Metropolis
Collectibles, the world's largest vintage comic book dealership, and ComicConnect.com, the largest online vintage comic auction house. He and his partner, Stephen Fishler, hold five Guinness World Records for the most expensive comics and related collectibles ever sold.

The U.S. government is trying to figure out what moves you -- specifically what moves you to get off the couch and sign up for federal benefits.

The Obama administration is dipping into research in behavioral economics and psychology to scrutinize federal documents, websites and procedures to get a better sense of what’s working -- and what’s not working -- to make the most of government programs from college aid to veterans benefits.

Today we were joined by Chief Behavioral Strategist of Hoffeld Group, David Hoffeld.

David Hoffeld is the Chief Behavioral Strategist at Hoffeld Group, a research-based sales training, coaching and consulting firm.   David works with companies throughout North America, showing them how to align their sales message with the findings of behavioral science.  He is a respected thought leader who is widely regarded as the #1 authority on integrating behavioral science and sales.  David has also been recently been featured in Fortune, U.S. News & World Report, CBS Radio, Fox News Radio and more.

Our words can move other people from a fear-based mindset in which they see obstacles as insurmountable, to a positive mindset where they see that change is possible, get unstuck, and take action. What makes the difference is what we choose to broadcast. Using scientifically proven communication strategies to ripple out positive change to others, we increase their happiness and success at work, as well as our own, instantly making us more effective leaders.

New research from the fields of positive psychology and neuroscience shows that small shifts to the way we communicate can create big ripple effects on business outcomes, including 31% higher productivity, 25% greater performance ratings, 37% higher sales, and 23% lower levels of stress.

Today we were joined by Michelle Gielan, Author of the new book Broadcasting Happiness.

Michelle Gielan, national CBS News anchor turned positive psychology researcher, is the bestselling author of Broadcasting Happiness. Michelle is the Founder of the Institute for Applied Positive Research and is partnered with Arianna Huffington to study how transformative stories fuel success. She is an Executive Producer of “The Happiness Advantage” Special on PBS and a featured professor in Oprah’s Happiness course. Michelle holds a Master of Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, and her research and advice have received attention from The New York Times, Washington Post, FORBES, CNN, FOX, and Harvard Business Review.
